Having grown up in a family-owned software business I’ve always had one foot in each camp – I love shiny new tech as much as the next geek, but I’ve also felt the pain of losing sight of what your customers need. When we got it wrong the money simply wasn't there. Ever since I’ve experienced all sorts of businesses that have lost touch with their customers, become trapped in churning out the same uninspiring product and are full of employees not reaching their potential. It drives me nuts.
So in 2010 I took on challenge that was too big for me, I knew I had to understand the customer and develop new products fast – I had no idea how to keep my team engaged and hit the deadlines. A friend pointed me towards Scrum, the product got created, we made some money and, to most people’s disbelief, we had fun doing it.
Now I help others take on those challenges, break them down into chunks, separate the wheat from the chaff and empower their teams to make awesome products that their customers will love. And I still try to have a little fun along the way.
