Title: IBM iX Europe Agile Lead

Tim Beattie has worked in IT Professional Services for over 13 years starting out his career on the PwC IT consulting graduate programme which was later acquired by IBM.

Having completed a number client engagements in the early stages of his career building technical skills in development, testing, solution architecture and technical project management on complex systems integration programmes, one common frustration that grew in Tim over time was his working on enormous projects of hundreds of people that took years to go live. He found it hard to reasonate working under such large investments that were not delivering back any business value quickly. Further, the the ever increasing dynamic industries he was working with (telecoms, travel and retail) meant that the business value eventually delivered was often remarkably different to what was originally required.

The answer to his frustration was "Agile". He'd tried corrective action by moving to a smaller IT Consultancy, Detica, to lead shorter and smaller engagements and then he found himself involved in projects that claimed to be "Agile" - a new buzz word in the IT industry. Admittedly his first experience of Agile wasn't great and he wasn't convinced by it but, as he continuously adapted to use some of the Agile methods, he came to realise that the core principles and values behind Agile was very much in his DNA and is what really drives his passion for IT delivery.

After seven years of applying Agile methods and with his ongoing approach to put corrective action in place where things aren't working as well as they could do, Tim has found himself back at IBM where he now leads Agile programmes at scale. These involve collaboration with multiple suppliers in a multi-Scrum environment and applying Distributed Scrum to deliver using offshore resourcing models. He provides Agile coaching and leads Agile training programmes to clients and IBM staff. This is all done with a renewed and ever increasing focus on being very transparent, delivering business value back to the client early, and inspecting and adapting to continuously improve his Agile teams such that he delivers outcomes as opposed to outputs and does so regularly.
