Why take this course

After a year or two as a Product Owner, the hard part is no longer the backlog mechanics. It is the stakeholder who goes around you, the roadmap that turns into a promise, and the feature request that is really a solution in disguise.

A-CSPO works on that part of the job, in simulations and exercises with other people who are doing it.

What you will be able to do afterwards

  • Turn a feature request into the outcome it should change, and decide from there.
  • Test the riskiest assumption in an idea before the team spends a sprint building it.
  • Order the backlog with PAIR™, so the next work up is also ready to build.
  • Say no to a stakeholder with the evidence and the trade-off on the table, and keep the relationship.
  • Run a Sprint Review that changes what happens next, instead of a demo people sit through.

What your seat includes

  • Live and online with Mark, capped at 12 seats.
  • Two years of Scrum Alliance membership.
  • Lifetime coaching with Mark. Email him, book a call, bring him the roadmap your stakeholders keep rewriting. There is no end date on it.
  • Hundreds of downloadable resources, kept current after you leave.
  • A money-back guarantee.

How the time is spent

Live and online, in simulations, role-plays and exercises on real product problems, your own included.

Strategy and discovery

  • Product vision and strategy tied to business outcomes.
  • Discovery and hypothesis-driven development: testing assumptions before building.
  • Measuring value by outcomes rather than output.

The backlog and the decisions in it

  • PAIR™, Mark's model for triaging every request and ordering the backlog from raw idea to imminent.
  • Prioritization and value modeling, including cost of delay.
  • Forecasting under uncertainty, and keeping stakeholders honest about what a forecast means.

Stakeholders and scale

  • Stakeholder work, including saying no with evidence.
  • Sprint Reviews that change what happens next.
  • Product ownership across several teams.

Who this is for

  • Working Product Owners and product managers who want to move past the mechanics.
  • Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches who support Product Owners and want to understand the job.
  • Business analysts and product leaders who shape what teams build.

Prerequisites

Scrum Alliance requires a CSPO and at least one year as a Product Owner within the last five years.

Who is teaching it

Mark Palmer is a Certified Scrum Trainer and a Certified Team Coach, a pairing most trainers do not hold. He has coached and trained at Capital One, State Street, Anthem, Phillips 66, SWIFT, and federal agencies in Defense, Justice, and Transportation. Before that he held the jobs his students hold, at Advance Auto Parts, Prison Fellowship, FamilyLife, and WMATA. He teaches every Great Fish class himself.

What is different about this class

  • Twelve seats. Small enough that you are working, not watching.
  • PAIR™. Mark's own backlog model, which you will not get from another trainer.
  • Coaching that outlasts the class. No end date, and it is with Mark rather than a support desk.
