As a software engineer I came in contact with agile development methods in the late 90ties, early 2000 when eXtreme Programming techniques were published. They offered a very different approach to software quality and address the question how to build software that fits the requirements.
After the publication of the scrum process I have managed a substantial amount of projects in that setting. It was very unusual at that time since people were used to formal specification and deadlines. Instead, we were tremendously happy to see that working software actually made a difference and short development cycles helped to identify misunderstandings. It also helped the customer to prioritize their requirements much better.
In the 90ties and 2000 I worked as a developers and saw the improvements on that side. Over the course of some years I moved to the "process side" and became a Scrum Master. Due to my experience with bigger projects I then changed my role to consult multi-team development activities.
In 2014 I became Head of Web Development. This included approx. 110 developers, 70 products and significant amount of people from other departments. I initiated a transition project to establish Scrum for ten development teams.
Since 2017 I am working as an agile Coach and trainer for it-agile GmbH. I help organizations transition to agile working modes, with a focus on software development departments. With my knowledge in software development as well as management of larger departments I have a unique skill-set that I use to help management understand the needs of the organization and specially the agile teams.
