About

Title: Head of Agile Department

My name is Lucas Smith and I was born to Peace Corps parents in Nepal who were working to improve the effectiveness of rural farming in the Himalayan Mountains.  While the nature of my birth is somewhat removed from my current life, it highlights the environment that I was brought up in which has shaped an appreciation of diverse viewpoints and experiences, and desire to make a positive impact on the world.  I have had the opportunity to live in both Europe and Asia, completing my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from Penn State University in 2004, and my masters in Telecommunications from George Mason University in 2007.

I started work as a software engineer at ArgonST (later acquired by Boeing) in 2004 in a traditional waterfall development environment.  Early on I began trying to incorporate better engineering practices such as Test Driven Development, smaller development cycles, and negotiating features vs. time/cost to ensure on time and budget delivery.   But it wasn’t until 2012 when I returned from a 2 1/2 year cycle of working in feild support on our systems that we began to really adopt Scrum as the framework for product development as a means to better the quality of our products and better the quality of life for employees. I was part of a small group that started a grass roots agile transformation and I am currently the agile coach for our division, while working as a Product Owner or Scrum Master as needed.  My role has involved rewriting process, training ScrumMasters and Product Owners, and working with management as they understand the fundamental shifts in roles and organization needed to support true Scrum adoption.  I have had to grow in my understanding of myself and others, and work to foster an environment that helps others be their best.  As I find the most fascinating challenges to be fundamentally human in nature, this has been a great opportunity to further my ability to make a difference in this world.
