About
Alexander Kylburg
What I do
Well, basically I do what I believe in.
More specific, as an agile coach I help people to learn more about agile methods and values, and support companies in treating their people fairly and see them as equal partners to reach a common goal. In my private life I try to develop myself to live my life with more awareness for me, others and the environment.
What I think!
My big question for life is: As we live in democratic systems and see them as superior over other forms of society, why then don´t we organise our companies or organisations more in that way? And yes, for me that counts also for the Scrum Alliance itself. If we don´t question ourselfs regularly, we are no better than what we try to change.
How I came here
Before getting in contact with "Agile" I was an ordinary software developer. I studied computer science at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Germany from 1997 and finished with a Diploma in 2001. In the years to follow I worked as software developer for different companies, partly self-employed, partly in an internship. In 2008 I became team leader of a software team of 8 developers.
In 2009, we introduced scrum in that team, and I had the opportunity to change into the role of the scrum master. This was a total life changer and I realized that this was way more how I wanted to work, than as a developer. So I took my CSM one year later and coached the team and the company for over three years until early 2013. Then I wanted to share my enthusiasm and experience with other, bigger companies, and more teams so I worked on different projects for a consulting company. In May 2014 I finally got self-employed with my company ‘Paragraph Eins’, and have coached several companies of different size from two up to 25 teams.
What I do else
Besides helping organizations improve, I participate and engage in the agile community a lot. Especially my local community developed massively and helped me with great support and exchange in the very beginning. I loved this exchange so much, that I started to organize the "Agile Cologne", a bi-annual open space conference, together with others. Rising from 60 participants back in 2013, we came across more than 300 tickets sold for September 2019, and have been the first online conference with 180 participants using only Miro and Zoom in early March 2020. This conference has become a big influencing regional event and is even recognized from coaches across germany and netherlands now.
As a result of my engagement and connections in the local community as well as countrywide, I was asked to facilitate the open space at the XP conference in Cologne in May 2017.
