A Product Owner’s real job is not to say yes to ideas, but to say no with clarity. Over the course of Rafa’s ACSPO two-day training, I deepened my understanding of what it means to be an effective Product Owner beyond product roadmapping. This course broadened my perspective on product management and provided me with practical tactics on ways to negotiate with tough stakeholders. Through a hands-on approach that combined engaging simulations with proven frameworks drawn from Rafa’s extensive career in product management, the learning was both practical and immediately applicable. On day one, we explored common product team dysfunctions. The exercises we completed reinforced the core attributes of a successful Product Owner, particularly the importance of decision-making, accountability, and value-driven leadership. From buying features to theme scoring, we completed activities that reinforce a product owner’s responsibility to balance competing interests while keeping product goals front and center. The day concluded with Simon Sinek’s golden circle’s framework, Start With Why, which we applied to non-profit organizations of our choosing. One day two, we kicked off the day diving into well-known product discovery techniques such as the decantation tank by Danilo Alencar. In my 4-5 years of Product management experience, I had never been exposed to this framework and feel this is one that I look forward to applying in my next role. I also enjoyed the prompts that Rafa shared so that we can effectively brainstorm alongside ChatGBT. As a product manager that strives to be data driven, I appreciated the case study on how experiments were validated into something concrete by leveraging the Test Card template by Strategyzer. Value-led incremental development using the 80/20 rule also known as the Pareto Prioritization is a hack I am grateful to have learned during my ASCPO course. Overall, it was a very thought-provoking 2 days filled with best practices and exposure to top notch frameworks approved by Rafa that I wish I had learned sooner in my career.
