Biography
I have made a successful career for myself as an information technology and business leader. My contributions to the organizations I’ve worked in have been meaningful and recognized to the degree that I have prospered both in career progression and personal satisfaction. I began my career in retail operations with Borders Group. After 15 years of working and being promoted to positions of increasing responsibility in operations and logistics, I discovered I had an aptitude and passion for solving business problems by designing and leading the implementations of information technology solutions.
As a result, I completely changed my career focus from operational functions to technology. Chief among the reasons for doing that was that I wanted to be challenged by having to learn a new field and transform my capabilities to contribute in meaningful new ways, to the success an organization. I am passionate about building technical solutions to problems and leading teams of people who can deliver those solutions. Through my experience I have developed a unique skill set that enables me to be extremely effective at aligning technology strategy to an organization’s business strategy. I am also an ardent advocate in organizations for the continuous improvement of information flows and processes. I have demonstrated these skills and my ability to successfully deliver relevant technical solutions at both Fortune 500 and start-up organizations. In my most recent role as Chief Technology Officer at Power One Media in Ann Arbor, MI, I had the opportunity to lead a very successful renovation of both application and technical architectures, enabling that business to increase customer satisfaction and achieve a successful exit strategy.
Following that experience, I was fortunate in that my professional and personal success enabled me to have a great deal of latitude in choosing what to do next. While I had received a significant amount of support for technology training from my employers, I had always felt that I could meaningfully improve and validate my technology skills by successfully completing a top level academic program. In the fall of 2007 I entered the Master’s of Information program at the University of Michigan’s School of Information full time and began an IT consulting position with Mercedes Benz Technology. At the School of Information I had an opportunity to study with and be taught by some of the nation’s leading experts on social computing, information economics, incentive centered design and human computer interaction. The course of study also enabled me to engage myself in very detailed levels of technology development that, as a high level manager, I had not previously had the opportunity to do. Most important, I learned how to be even more successful in creating and providing technology solutions that better connect people with the information they want. I completed the program in 2009. In 2011 I joined ITHAKA as Director of Platform Engnieering. ITHAKA is a not for profit organization comitted to the advancement of higher education and research for the academic community. Our main web site www.jstor.org serves over 9000 academic institutions world wide. In my time there my resposibilities have increased and as VP Platform Engineering and Operations, I lead all technolgy architecture, development and operations. I am also responsible for Content Management systems and production.
I was born and raised in southeastern Pennsylvania and lived most of my life on the east coast before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1995. My wife and I live in Ann Arbor where she is co-owner of the Bellanina Day Spa.
