I am originally from Ukraine, but have been living in Canada since 2001. My IT career started back in Ukraine where I was trying my skills as a Web Developer and built a site with over 500 pages (most were formatted Word documents, but it was a start). I also did a lot of QA work for the same company and they had a suite of applications that had to be constantly manually tested.
After moving to Toronto I was just trying to "make a living" and did anything from cutting grass to being offered a Branch Manager position at a credit union to having 2 delivery trucks and being contracted by Sears, Future Shop and Best Buy do to their home deliveries.
Then I decided to get back into the IT field and got certified as a QA Analyst at Canadian Technology College in Toronto. Two weeks after completing the course I was hired by CIBC as a Quality Assurance Analyst to take part in rolling out their new online suite of products. As my contract was coming to an end I was offered another contract position, which I accepted, as a QA Analyst with Farm Credit Canada in Regina. As the contract ended I returned to Toronto and was hired by ICM Consulting as a Project Manager to overlook all of their web development projects. At some point we had over 30 projects on the go and I had to coordinate the work of multiple development teams in different regions as well as being in touch with the respective clients. Communication, management and time management were key to this job. I have since moved back to Saskatchewan (where my future wife lived) and got a job as a Technical Support Analyst with Point2 Technologies (later Yardi Systems) in Saskatoon. Started off as a first (and only) Technical Support Analyst with the company. I helped train 7 more TSAs in the department. Later moved into a Sales Engineer position and in July of 2010 I was offered a position of Technical Support Team Lead. By 2011 I was able to advance into the Account Manager role in Toronto office. My communication skills, strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills (and my "self praising in a cover letter" skills), desire to always learn and move ahead helped me be successful and move within the company.
We eventually moved back to Saskatoon (my wife was pregnant and she wanted to be close to her family) where I dove into construction business and running a daycare.
Now that our kids are a bit older I would love to get back in to the IT field. I have invested into getting certified as a Scrum Product Owner and a Scrum Master in February and would love to find a job where I could utilize these skills.
To sum this up, it might seem like I've been all over the map doing anything and everything, but we are talking 13 years of life and still most of the time has been spent in the IT field. I do have an entrepreneurial bone in me which is what drives me to try new things and constantly improve. And I in turn try to channel that drive into work.
