Why This Course & Instructor (Summary)

I honor your interest & initiative to grow your Agile skills & insights. I'll help you however I can. I'm an Agile Software Engineer+Coach+Trainer. I have 20+ years of Agile software development experience in roles including software engineer, architect, manager, director, consultant, coach, & trainer. I help innovative teams keep their process simple & essential, so they can get on with thrilling customers.

For every class, I strive to offer you my respect, help, kindness, humility, service, collaboration, creativity, bias towards action, innovation, & entrepreneurship. I aim to make the class a safe place to explore ideas.

Like most instructors, I hit the required CSM learning objectives. In addition, I give you multiple perspectives & examples for each topic. The goal is to help you think through the underlying principles. It also empowers you with lots of options to have an impact, even when there are challenges.

Why This Course & Instructor (Details)

I approach the learning objectives as follows:
1) first invite you to focus on one of the official learning objectives. We discuss it from the official perspective, per the Scrum Guide and the Scrum Alliance, and some examples. Then I add a few more perspectives to that same topic such as
2) what might an advanced team do.
3) alternative approaches that satisfy the spirit;
4) what I've has seen work and not work in real teams;
5) what do other students in the class think.
6) more if wanted.

Then we'll go back to the official response, and add a few more examples. I strive to present these perspectives & examples objectively without bias and involve you in exploring the tradeoffs. We do this via dialogue, role-playing, simulations, Q/A. The goal is to help you see the underlying principle and multiple options for impact.

I hope you find this approach to your liking. I'd welcome any feedback on how it comes across to you.

I look forward to meeting you in my class and helping you on your Agile journey. The Agile transformation is still young. We're all in it together, trying our best to help teams do awesome work.

What You Will Learn in the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) Course

The course is fundamentally focused on standard Core Scrum, so you know you’re learning the concepts and vocabulary other Certified ScrumMasters learned. Plus, the course includes a discussion of common optional Scrum practices and various other topics and recommendations based on experience with working Scrum teams. I add multiple perspectives to each topic so that you have more insight and options for impact deep into the uncertain future.

Outline - Learning Objectives

Scrum Foundations

  • Scrum Theory
  • The Scrum Roles
  • Scrum Events
  • Scrum Artifacts

Additions for CSM

  • Lean, Agile, & Scrum
  • Scrum Master Core Competencies
  • Service to the Development Team
  • Service to the Product Owner
  • Service to the Organization
  • Changes to the Scrum Guide

Other Topics, as time permits, and the class chooses:

User Stories, Epics, Acceptance Criteria, INVEST, Estimation, Burn-down/up charts, Velocity, Capacity, Release Planning, Scaling, Distributed teams, Vision, Chartering, Engineering/Technical practices, Five levels of planning, Team growth, Product Roadmap, Small Batches, Definition of Ready, Look Ahead, “Story Time”, Testing Pyramid, Running Tested Features (RTF), Antipatterns, Challenges, etc.

Extra Engineering Perspective, plus Lean Startup Principles

Did you know that the first Scrum teams, and the best Scrum software teams, make full use of Agile engineering practices from Extreme Programming and beyond? I'll point out the practices, and explain why & how they matter. While this topic is not on the CSM test, it matters to your success with Scrum for real products.

This course often includes a brief introduction to Lean Startup principles, how they complement Scrum, and how the full Scrum team can participate in product experiments and validation, in organizations of all sizes.

Product & service creators, managers, leaders, CEOs, Sales, Marketing, HR, stakeholders, developers, test professionals, and anyone who wants to learn a better faster way to create products with more awesomeness. While a great fit for software products, Scrum can also help develop hardware, media, services, and beyond.

This course is the most known introduction to Agile & Scrum, and hence it is often attended by the full range of people in an organization, CEOs aspiring to be supportive "servant-leaders."

The Agile mindset and Scrum framework can be applied to any type of product or service. Scrum started in the software industry in the early 1990's but has since been used for coordinating more activities, including senior management, sales, human resources, education, hardware, and beyond. In the class, it is common to see meet people from leadership, project management, software development, test, and more.

This class will be a good place to network with people interested in Scrum and Agile principles and practices, brainstorm solutions, and see who's doing what.
