Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) Class: Lead the Product Journey

Product Owners - Delivering Business Outcomes

Every year, businesses launch products filled with potential, yet 95% of those products fail. Because they focus on outputs rather than outcomes. They deliver features, but not value.

As a Product Owner, your role is at the heart of this challenge. You are the catalyst who bridges the gap between customer needs, business goals, and development teams. But the question is:

  • How do you ensure your product delivers real value?
  • How do you move from simply “shipping features” to creating lasting customer happiness?

This journey requires more than just writing user stories or managing a backlog. It demands deep engagement, strategic thinking, and the ability to lead with impact.

Lead the Product Journey from Bright Ideas to Happy Customers

As a Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), your mission is to maximize value delivery. This means embracing a mindset shift:

  • Listen beyond the obvious to uncover the real needs of your customers and business.
  • Frame and validate hypotheses to ensure you’re building the right thing.
  • Strategically sequence work to optimize outcomes—not just outputs.

The best Product Owners don’t just manage tasks; they lead the product journey. From discovery to delivery, they are the driving force that transforms bright ideas into happy customers.

This Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) Workshop is designed to help you:

  • Move from theory to practice with real-world techniques you can apply immediately.
  • Engage deeply in hands-on team exercises that simulate the challenges of product ownership.
  • Build essential skills in a fun, supportive, and immersive environment.

Forget boring lectures and PowerPoint slides! This workshop is backed by brain science and adult learning principles, ensuring you’ll retain and apply everything you learn.

We’ve also eliminated the dreaded “Zoom fatigue” with an engaging virtual format that maximizes focus and participation.

Learn the Nuts & Bolts of Great Product Ownership

A truly powerful Product Owner skillset includes the ability to:

  • Facilitate and negotiate with stakeholders (even the difficult ones!).
  • Translate customer needs into actionable requirements in the product backlog.
  • Support development teams through planning, development, and release cycles.
  • Ensure frequent feedback loops between teams and stakeholders.
  • Manage expectations from product vision to release.

These critical skills are not something you can learn from a textbook or a lecture. That’s why this workshop is intensely hands-on and interactive.

Each session is structured around:

  1. Brief concept introductions to ground your understanding.
  2. Practical team exercises that simulate real-world challenges.
  3. Immediate application of tools and techniques to reinforce your learning.

Delivered in short intervals of time across several days, this workshop is designed to transform how you work as a Product Owner.

Why This Workshop is Different

  • PRACTICE over theory: You’ll gain tools you can use immediately—not just concepts to study later.
  • ENGAGEMENT over lectures: You’ll participate in interactive exercises, not passive listening.
  • APPLYING knowledge over gathering it: Everything you learn will be applied in real-time exercises.

BONUS TOPICS (time permitting):

In addition to mastering core product ownership skills, we’ll explore bonus topics that can elevate you from a good Product Owner to a great one:

  • Generative AI for Product Owners: Leverage cutting-edge AI tools to enhance your work.
  • Saying No to Stakeholders and Customers: A game-changing skill to maintain focus and value.
  • Value Estimation Techniques: Prioritize work based on the impact it delivers.
  • Creating a Business Case: Connect your product vision to business outcomes.
  • 7 Powers to Make Your Product Uncopyable: Learn strategies to build a product that stands out in the market.

"A moment of pride for the agilist in me. I recently received my Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) credential from Scrum Alliance. Thanks to Anil Jaising, CST®, Certified TBR-VE and DevOps Trainer for a truly engaging and interactive learning session for the best practices and techniques that make an effective Product Owner and a true agilist." -- Garima Ahuja.

"Very insightful class. I am relatively new to some of the PO concepts and this class helped clarify things I had questions on. The interactive way it is taught is both fun and a great way to apply course concepts. I feel I gained tremendous knowledge from this course! " -- Chad

"I had an opportunity to go through a CSPO training with them. It was really good course and the trainer covered all the aspect of a PO’s journey. It gave me confidence of taking another scrum related course and the knowlede I carried was so helpful. The one and only feedback I have is that I struggled to keep track of the way course is going to run and then later I caught up with it. It may be helpful to have short video on to give an intro for students like me. If another course is offered and is relevant to me then I will surely take it with concept and beyond... "  -- Asad Baig

"If you truly want to learn practical skills to become a product owner, this is the class for you. This class goes beyond making students sit through slides they will not remember the next day. This is an active learning experience focused on giving students practical experience through various case studies and activities. Not only is this a more enjoyable way to learn but also a great way to get the context and practical experience needed to grasp the concepts behind your certification." --Frank K

The Fine Print

FAQ

  • How soon can I get my CSPO® certification?    On completing your participation in the full workshop, we will let the Scrum Alliance know of your successful completion of the course.  You'll receive an email from them to setup your profile on the Scrum Alliance website and then you'll be a bonafide, official CSPO®!

  • Wait!  Don't I Need to Take an Exam to be Certified as a CSPO®?    No. Currently the only requirement to become a CSPO® is the successful completion of the course.  The Scrum Alliance is hard at work to develop an online exam for the CSPO®.  So if you love taking tests, wait a bit to enroll in a CSPO® workshop. Otherwise - get it now with us!

  • Can I Miss Several Hours of the Workshop and Still be Certified?   No.  If you miss more than 15 minutes of the workshop, you will not be eligible for certification, and you will be welcome to attend the rest of the workshop.  Don't worry - if something big comes up, we'll move you to a future workshop at no cost.

  • What do I need to bring to class? Appetite for good food and learning.  You will be provided with all the material needed for group activities. We recommend you bring a notebook to write on.

About the training experience

This course is based on modern adult instructional methods to facilitate learning, create a fun and productive environment, and mature a deeper understanding of the concepts.  You will experience an interactive experience, enjoy the learning, and have fun in the process.

We use zero slides. The whole class is based on interactive exercises, simulations, and class discussions. The instructor explains key concepts and brings in real-life stories, and participants learn from applying the concepts and from sharing with each other. We incorporate liberating structures and innovation games into the exercises. You will experience these useful frameworks that you can use spark innovation and collaboration with your team members.

Product Vision – A clear, shared vision is crucial for successful Scrum and Agile teams. We’ll walk through techniques to help unify your team, stakeholders, and customers around the right vision for your product or service.

Prune the Product Tree  – Roadmaps are an important link between Product Vision and the Product Backlog. Unfortunately, many roadmaps are not much more than a slide with dates and bullet pointed features, which doesn’t provide any context. Learn how to use the Prune the Product Tree, an Innovation Game®, to collaborate with customers to build a real roadmap.

Product Backlog Basics – Learn the simple rules associated with a Product Backlog as well as a set of key practices for using a Product Backlog to develop consensus among the stakeholders on what will be delivered. Other topics we cover include:

  • Writing User Stories

  • Acceptance Criteria

  • Vertically Slicing User Stories

  • Product Backlog Refinement

Ordering the Product Backlog – The core of the Product Owner’s job is to order and prioritize among the many great things we could do and help the Development Team focus only on what is most important. Many traditional prioritization techniques are too slow for most Scrum Teams, so many Product Owners order the Product Backlog solely on intuition or by responding to the currently squeaky wheel. Learn a prioritization framework that helps you visualize the relative importance of your customer segments, internal & external stakeholders, corporate strategy, and maintain clean code.

Agile Release Planning – Believe it or not, we’ve heard many times the misinformed statement: “We’re Agile, so we don’t really plan.” Not only is this inconsistent with the Agile Manifesto, it is usually just bad business. In our experience, the best Scrum teams create a plan and expect it to change as work begins!

  • Learn the nuts and bolts of managing stakeholder expectations with an Agile release plan

  • Learn how and when to it makes sense to update the release plan

Working in Sprints – the Product Owner role doesn’t end once the Product Backlog is ready for Sprint Planning. Your team will be most effective if you are available during the Sprint to provide feedback at key points.

  • Learn how the Product Owner works with Development Teams  during the Sprint

  • Explore best practices in balancing time among the Development Team, stakeholders, and customers

Scrum Product Owners, Agile Product Managers, Kanban Service Request Managers, or any individuals wanting to better understand and embrace the role that business and customers play in driving product development for Scrum and Agile teams. Such individuals might include:

  • Managers, Directors and VPs of Product Management

  • Product Managers at all levels of their career

  • Business Analysts

  • Functional Managers

  • Project Sponsors

  • IT Leadership (Managers/Directors/VPs/CIOs/CTOs)

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of Scrum is assumed. For example, participants should read one of the Scrum introduction books or other find another means of self-study. Previous experience on a Scrum team is desirable.

Something to know:  About 20% of all public CSMs & CSPOs have more than 40 people enrolled.  That's not us.

Our workshops are designed to be interactive in nature.  There are breakout exercises roughly every hour for students to practice and apply concepts in “table teams” of a few people rather than in a plenary (whole class) session.  Our public class enrollments are generally below the average course size of 16.  This helps you get rich feedback and interaction from other participants and your trainer.

Our aim is that you have an engaging and practical experience - not just learn concepts and pass a test.  Our intent is that the workshop leaves you feeling eager, excited, and confident about putting the tips, techniques, and frameworks into practice.
