Biography

Geoff Watts is the UK's first Certified Scrum Trainer and Certified Scrum Coach, offering training and coaching in Scrum. Starting his agile journey at British Telecom and helping lead one of the largest agile transformations so far before moving into various industries such as publishing, financial services, pharmaceuticals, utilities, education and online service providers, he is one of the most experienced Scrum coaches in the UK and, therefore, best placed to give you the greatest chance of success when adopting Scrum in your organisation.

As well as offering innovative and engaging public training classes, Geoff also offers personal 121 leadership coaching and regularly coaches ScrumMasters, Product Owners and leaders within organisations looking to become more agile or better servant-leaders.

Geoff is a TEDx speaker and the author of the best-selling book Scrum Mastery: From Good to Great Servant-Leadership available on Amazon in the USA and Europe and the best-selling coaching book The Coach's Casebook: Mastering The Twelve Traits That Trap Us available on Amazon in the USA and Europe and he also has some great eLearning courses available at Front Row Agile.

"Geoff is an extremely experienced Scrum trainer and Agile coach. The quality of the training courses is excellent and he is adept at working with people on the front-line, through to board level. He is passionate about helping individuals and organisations think and act in an agile way."

- Andrew Keene, Head of Technology Reform at Government Digital Services

"I have had the pleasure of working with Geoff both as a coach and to have him coach us at Iterate. Seldom have I met so much ability in one man. His skills as a good listener is the first thing that hits you as extraordinary. Yet you will notice that his ability to see good, creative solutions on difficult challenges is even better.

He delivers the message in a straight forward and professional manner, and he is blessed with the courage to challenge the views of people in all levels of an organization. It is obvious that Geoff is truly committed and inspired by his work as an agile coach. I already look forward to the next opportunity to work with him. Keep up the good work!"

- Kim Leskovsky, Iterate AS

"I head the Agile Transformation at BT and Geoff was a key player in that transformation from the start. He is something special and if you want someone with integrity, conviction and energy with a great pedigree in how to transform teams and introduce Agile ... Geoff's your man."

- Sean O'Donovan, BT

Articles I've written

An Inside Job
External consultants bring a wealth of experience and an objective perspective to the classroom. However, we have been experimenting with running internal certified ScrumMaster courses ourselves. Bringing the training in-house has resulted in some significant benefits but has also brought some significant challenges.

Production Support and Scrum
Bugs and support issues don't always wait for a new sprint before rearing their ugly heads. What should a Scrum team do to balance feature development with support activities?

Scrum Role Playing
It is often said that to truly understand someone else, one must “walk a mile in that person’s shoes.” Similarly, taking on more than one role on a Scrum team, on a temporary basis at least, can have unexpected advantages that may offset the disadvantages.

Priority Markets
Maintaining a prioritised product backlog of desired functionality is a key aspect of agile software development. When working with a single product owner and a small number of backlog items, this task is easily managed. However, scaling prioritisation to multiple stakeholders and large product backlogs presents unique challenges. This paper presents a market-based approach to prioritisation that is fair, open, and scalable.

Learning To Share
“Share everything. Don't take things that aren't yours. Put things back where you found them” - Robert Fulghum So another wonderful Christmas has just passed and my two children had more new toys than they knew what to do with. Of...
