I am a software developer of many years. I have worked for large and small companies. I also have my own consulting company. My clients have included from IT support to large, custom applications.

 I come from the old school water fall approach. I would often give my clients the choice of paying me some money up front to do a very detailed specification and then I would give them a fixed bid or they could just pay me by the hour to get the job done and they could make changes or stop the project any time they wanted.

My personal preference was that they would do the fixed bid because I loved to play with MS Project and go through the whole specification process. In the end I knew it wouldn't work and usually tried to talk clients into the hourly so they could get what they really wanted. Little did I know I was using the prinicipals of Scrum before Scrum was anything more than a rugby term.
