In fall 2011 I started working on a PhD in management and organization. I will focus on Agile organizations and the organizational transition from industrial to post-modern. Right now my interest is in Agile governance and how it differs from traditional governance. I hope to graduate in 2014 but would not be surprised if it took a couple years longer.
Nokia, Agile Coach
September 2007 - January 2012, Helsinki, Finland
I worked as an Agile Coach at Nokia, in what is perhaps the most complex product development environment in the world. We had more than 100 geographically dispersed software teams, writing embedded software tightly in sync with development of new flagship mobile devices based on ARM and Intel processors. We worked on the full software stack (80% of which was open source) from kernel drivers up to a cutting-edge UI layer. Our systems had limited CPU, memory and battery and had to fulfill soft real-time requirements.
In this context, achieving "enterprise-level Agile" was not a walk in the park. We used principles from Lean and Flow to analyze, visualize and drive improvement. People turned out to be the most complex bit.
We (a handful of people, including me and another Agile Coach) introduced an incremental planning system for our department, guided the deployment of an end-to-end toolchain, trained hundreds of people and arranged Scrum certification for hundreds more, arranged internal annual conferences and countless workshops, sparred with managers and leaders. I have personally coached and mentored dozens of teams and helped resolve hundreds of problems. Our guiding principle was to coach the users of a process to improve their own processes.
I joined the Nokia Agile Council in 2008 and was chairman in 2010. The NAC is notable because of the vast amounts of data and experience shared inside the company.
Accomplishments: An enterprise-level Agile deployment resulting in the critically acclaimed Nokia N9.

Meridea Financial Software, Head of Products and Quality
April 2006 - September 2006, Helsinki, Finland
Responsible for product development and team leadership. Worked as Scrum Master and Product Owner.
Accomplishments: I rescued a dispirited team by reintroducing Scrum and protecting the team from external disturbances.
