I learned from a former co-worker that a good indicator of whether Scrum Master is doing his job well is to know how much the team is depending on it. The idea is that the less dependent the better.

Also performing in scaled age groups, with PDCA events of SM's and stakeholders to ensure continuous improvement and communication between teams.
