This Certified Scrum Product Owner^® (CSPO^®) training course is an intensive two day workshop on one of the most critical roles defined by the world's most popular Agile framework. About certification

This Certified Scrum Product Owner training course offer the opportunity to attain a globally recognised certification with the Scrum Alliance. To achieving this, participants who fulfil the 16 contact hours and participation requirements stated at the beginning of the course.

This course may qualify Project Management Professionals (PMPs) for 14 PDUs as approved by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Meet your trainer - Rowan Bunning

Rowan is a pioneer of Scrum in Australia having became a ScrumMaster in 2003, Australia's first Certified Scrum Professional in 2006 and Certified Scrum Trainer in 2008. Since then he has delivered well over 320 Scrum Certification courses in Australia and New Zealand making him one of the most experienced Scrum trainers in the Australasian region.

With a background in software development including with eXtreme Programming and in 2007 he was hired as an Agile Coach by one of Europe's foremost Agile consultancies which partnered with Ken Schwaber and Mike Cohn (two of the most widely recognised names in the global Agile community). Since then, Rowan has guided organisations from banks to video games companies through accelerated Agile adoptions including Scrum, Kanban and Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS) as well as consulting to management on Agile assessment and change leadership.

Rowan speaks from first-hand experience, having worked for years in each of the Scrum roles including ScrumMaster, Product Owner and Development Team Member as well as in a wide variety of other technical, leadership and coaching roles. He has worked in a wide variety of industries including banking, federal and state governments, health insurance, superannuation, salary packing, retail, manufacturing, building security, information security, media and video gaming.

Unlike many Agile Coaches and Trainers, Rowan not only has years of experience in business/IT Projects, but also in non-project pure product development environments. This allows Rowan to guide clients in combining the best of both worlds to achieve superior results.

Rowan has spoken about Scrum at conferences in Australia, Europe and North America since 2006 and has been involved with organising the Sydney Scrum User Group since 2008. Rowan hold accreditations as a Certified LeSS Practitioner (CLP), Certified Agile Leadership credential II (CAL II), Organization and Relationship Systems at Work (ORS@Work) coach and is Australasia's first approved Scrum Alliance “Path to CSP” Educator.

Sprint Goals

We use elements of the Scrum framework to manage this course. The following Sprint Goals provide a high level outcome for each half-day Sprint.

Goal: Scrum Framework - You are able to describe the Scrum framework from a Product Owner’s perspective.

Goal: Shared Artefacts - You are able to describe how a Product Owner uses the shared artefacts of Scrum to achieve the goals of Product Ownership.

Goal: Shared Vision - You are able to collaboratively create a Shared Vision and model users for whom the product is to be designed.

Goal: Release Management - You are able to manage a multi-Sprint release, subject to emergent information, to a successful outcome.

Initial course backlog

The following backlog provides an initial course agenda. Just like any good Agile initiative, the backlog that we choose to pull in can change as we inspect feedback from stakeholders and make adaptations to the backlog during the course.

Please note that the following backlog does not detail the many group discussions and hands-on exercises that we run throughout the course.

Day 1: Scrum Framework and Product Owner Activities

The Need for Product Ownership: As a product collaborator, I want to understand the Why behind the Product Owner role and key benefits of Scrum from a business perspective.
The Scrum Framework: As a product collaborator, I want to understand the Scrum Framework, so that I can leverage it effectively in order to produce and sustain a successful product.
Completing the Scrum Puzzle: As a product collaborator, I want understand Scrum events, relationships and artefacts holistically from a Product Owner perspective so that I understand how I interact with other people and artefacts in Scrum environment.
Iterating and Incrementing: As a product collaborator, I want to understand how iterating and incrementing differ, so that I can use these strategies effecitvely in product development.
Refining the Product Backlog: As a Product Owner I want to understand the criteria for a well refined backlog and how to go about refining it, so that I can keep mine in good shape.
Prioritisation tools: As a Product Owner, I want some techniques I can use to help me to order my Product Backlog effectively.
The Product Owner Role: As a Product Owner, I want to understand the characteristics of a good Product Owner, so that I know what it takes to do the job well.
Living the Scrum Values: As a Product Owner, I want to know what is valued as part of the Scrum approach so that I can use these values to guide me in my work.

Day 2: Full-day Product Development Simulation

Envisioning: As a Product Owner I want to learn how to create a shared Vision, so that I create a motivating environment and have rich ongoing engagement with the vision.
Impact Mapping: As a Product Owner, I want a technique for collaboratively establishing the Outcomes and Impacts-based for my product so that I can more effectively manage stakeholders and maximise the work not done.
MVP: As a product collaborator, I want to understand the Lean Startup MVP technique and how it differs from a focus on a tightly-scoped delivery for use.
User Roles: As a product collaborator, I want to have clarity on who we are building the solution for so we can solicit their input and address their specific needs.
User Stories and Story Writing workshop: As a product collaborator, I want hands-on experience with User Stories, so that I have a technique for creating good Product Backlog Items.
Story Mapping: As a product collaborator, I want to be able to plan releases in a collaborative way so that I can get the best ideas and buy-in from all key players.
Splitting Stories: As a product collaborator, I want a toolkit of techniques for splitting stories that I can use to keep my backlog well refined.
Buy a Feature: As a Product Owner I want a technique for soliciting input from customers / stakeholders as to their interest in features so that I have richer information on their interests when prioritising.
Release Burndown: As a Product Owner, I want to learn how to interpret and use a Release Burndown, so that I can track and control my product progress to release.
Agile Release Management: As a Product Owner, I want to know how to manage my release so that our probability of success is maximised.

This course is particularly suitable for those shaping the product/solution from a business perspective. This includes, but is not limited to:

Product Owners,
Product Managers,

This course is also highly relevant to those involved in coaching a Product Owner to be effective in their role. This includes:

ScrumMasters,
Iteration Managers, and
Project Managers.

We expect that participants whose experience is predominately with business operations may have limited familiarity with project management and product design issues. Conversely, participants coming from a project management or technical background may have may have less familiarity with how to ascertain value and make business decisions. For these reasons, this course covers both the Product Management (determining the right product) and the Project Management (successful execution) components of the Product Owner’s role.

Pre-requisites

Whilst there are no formal training pre-requisites for the CSPO course, it is expected that participants have an appreciation of the challenges involved in product development or business solution delivery from a stakeholder or management perspective.

Preparation

A little preparation goes a long way toward getting the most out of the training experience. Participants are expected to familiarise themselves with the following material prior to the course.

Enjoyed the interactivity and learning methods. I wanted to understand how the method could better suits my situation.

I enjoyed the way Rowan made the training materials accessible and engaging with a variety of learning methods. I thought the scrum management method was taught very well. I wanted the chance for practical solutions for my particular unique circumstances (team and product) that didn't seem to fit in with many of the examples.

This the second course I've attended run by Rowan. He's a great teacher, taking the time to explain concepts, give real-world examples. A good balance of theory and practice makes the learning fun and more deeply engaging.
