About me (the trainer)

This class is led by Valerio Zanini, CST, CSPO, and CPIT. Formerly a Director of Product Development at Capital One where he led several Scrum product teams and launched new multi-million dollar digital products. Now a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) with Scrum Alliance and a Certified Product Innovation Trainer (CPIT) with Spark Engine, he is the author of AI for Product Managers, Deliver Great Products That Customers Love and co-author of Sprint Your Way to Scrum.

Valerio has more than 20 years of professional experience spanning product development, agile transformation, design thinking, and training. He helps organizations worldwide adopt Scrum, improve product development practices, and launch great products. He provides consulting and training to organizations of any size, helping them become more innovative with Agile, Scrum, SAFe, Product Management, and Design Thinking practices.

When he was a Capital One where he led digital product development initiatives for retail bank and transformed how customers interact with bankers. One of his projects was presented at Dreamforce 2017 as the largest Salesforce implementation in the Financial Services industry to-date. Together with his team, Valerio launched the MVP in market in just 4.5 months by adopting Scrum practices and focusing on key priorities.

He is a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST), a SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), and a Kanban Management Professional (KMP II). As a Certified Product Innovation Trainer (CPIT), he also teaches the master-level class Certified Product Innovation Professional (CPIP) with Spark Engine.

I have covered the role of Product Owner, I have led product teams at companies large and small, and I have trained hundreds of professionals at Fortune 500 companies including Capital One, Fannie Mae, Walgreens, eBay, McKesson, Wesco, Konica Minolta, and HP.

I bring real life experience from having built and launched digital products in a variety of industries, and having coached Product Management and Scrum teams at different stages of their development journey. I share the real-life experiences with my students for a more effective and realistic learning experience.

I have extended the CSPO curriculum with AI topics that help product managers understand how to use AI tools for discovery, planning, and prototyping. We do hands-on practice of these tools in class.

I am a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) with Scrum Alliance and a Certified Product Innovation Trainer (CPIT) with Spark Engine. I have also completed advance training programs for instructors and coaches, including CCTA Level 1 Coach with the Coach Certification Training Academy, Training from the Back of the Room (TBR), and Landmark Self-Expression and Leadership Program (SELP). As a result, my classes are highly interactive, based on on simulations and real-life discussions, rather than boring Powerpoint lectures.

My classes are taught over multiple days to minimize the impact on your work schedule, and also give you more time to absorb concepts. And, I strive to support my students both during the class and after it with follow-up coaching and additional resources to keep learning about Scrum and Product Management practices.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation requests submitted at least 7 business days or more prior to the start of the course are entitled to a full refund (minus eventual Eventbrite fees). Students submitting cancellation requests less than 7 business days prior to the start of the course will be offered a credit toward a future course of equivalent value within one year, or a refund of 50% the amount paid for registration. No shows on either day of the class receive no refund. Should the organizer cancel the course for any reason, each registered student will be issued a full refund.

Structure of the class

Format: Online on Zoom with live instructor USA-based. Learn by doing with practical exercises and simulations. Workbook provided.

Max class size: Limited number of students for focused attention with the instructor and more air-time for questions and discussions.

Certification: This class includes the Certified Scrum Product Owner certification.

Foundations of the PO role
This category focuses on the underlying Scrum framework and the core responsibilities and mindset required for the Product Owner role.
Through this CSPO course, the participant will able to:

• Explain Scrum foundations, including the specific roles, events, and artifacts that make up the framework.
• Define iterative and incremental product development and explain the specific role of the Product Owner within that process.
• Describe the core competencies and fundamentals required to be successful in the Product Owner role.
• Demonstrate how to effectively work with stakeholders and developers, including how to handle product ownership with multiple teams.
• Describe the importance of balancing understanding the customer, driving development, and measuring outcomes.

Problem Space
These objectives align with the "Discover" and "Define" dimensions of innovation, where the focus is on understanding user needs and establishing strategic direction.
Through this CSPO course, the participant will able to:

• Conduct discovery activities such as empathy interviews and observations to understand user needs and opportunities.
• Segment and define users using tools like User Personas and Customer Journey Maps to create context for the team.
• Differentiate between outputs and outcomes to ensure the team focuses on solving customer problems rather than just building features.
• Define and measure product value by identifying the right metrics and distinguishing them from vanity metrics.
• Create a compelling Product Vision and establish a Product Goal to provide focus and direction for the Scrum team.

Solution Space
This category encompasses the "Design," "Drive," and "Deliver" dimensions, focusing on the tactical execution of building and validating the product.
Through this CSPO course, the participant will able to:

• Manage the Product Backlog effectively by creating, refining, and ordering items to maximize value.
• Describe different formats to write product backlog items and new features.
• Write high-quality User Stories using the INVEST criteria and clear Acceptance Criteria.
• Apply various prioritization techniques such as MoSCoW, RICE, WSJF, or Buy-a-Feature to order the backlog.
• Perform product planning and forecasting using velocity, capacity, and release planning techniques.
• Identify and validate product assumptions using experiments like MVPs, Concierge testing, or Wizard of Oz techniques.
• Explain the importance of a strong Definition of Done in ensuring the delivery of a usable product increment.
• Use roadmaps as strategic tools to connect organizational strategy to product execution.

The CSPO certification attests the ability to effectively manage a product from discovery activities with customers to delivery of value to end users.

Prerequisites

There is no required prior certificate, educational background, or work experience needed to participate in this CSPO course and receive the certification. However, prior experience with building a product, launching a product in market, or managing a project is beneficial.

A few pre-class reading materials are provided before the class starts to get you acquainted to new concepts and applications of Agile and Scrum.

Full participation in the class is required for certification.
