Scrum Alliance® Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) Application
We have confirmed the following candidate interview schedule for 2018:
- Sunday, August 5, 2018 before the Agile 2018 event in San Diego, CA (application deadline: April 5, 2018).
- Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, 2018 at the Global Scrum Gathering® London (application deadline: June 5, 2018).
If you are submitting with a particular Global Scrum Gathering in mind, please register to attend the Gathering and plan to arrive in the Gathering city the day before the noted interview date. Applicants are placed in the backlog in the order of receipt, but review priority will be given to those that are registered.
Please note that even if your application is received prior to the submission deadline, the applicant backlog will impact the invitation to move forward to interview. It is not always feasible to move every application forward in a timely manner based on the volume of applications we are prescreening for Gatherings, the attention to detail, rigor, and quality that is required for this certification, and the volunteer nature of our TAC team reviewers. We encourage applicants to submit a thorough and complete application (based on the stated requirements on the website) and to have patience with the lengthy review process.

Certified Scrum Trainer®
professionals ("CSTs") play a vital role within Scrum Alliance®
. CSTs are licensed to teach Certified ScrumMaster®
) and Certified Scrum Product Owner®
) courses and have access to course listing services on the Scrum Alliance website.
Stringent certification requirements are imposed on prospective CSTs to ensure that only those who are qualified to meet this commitment are entrusted to engage in this role on behalf of Scrum Alliance. Applicants wishing to become CSTs are required to read and comply with the Certification Standards
for Certified Scrum Trainer professionals and are approved pursuant to the Process for Initial Certification of Certified Scrum Trainer® Professionals
CSTs must demonstrate an ability to convey their expertise through approved CSM and CSPO courses. Specifically, the CSM and CSPO courses taught by CSTs must address all of the learning objectives set forth in the corresponding documentation provided by Scrum Alliance in the Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM) Learning Objectives

CST Applicants are required to cover all CSM Course Learning Objectives. Course content is screened by Scrum Alliance during the application process in order to verify that the material is consistent with those learning objectives and Scrum and Agile principles.

The CST program is designed to authorize certain well-qualified instructors to teach the foundations of the Scrum framework through an introductory course that leads to either CSM or CSPO designation. Applicants will be registered as CSTs upon (1) successful completion of this application, (2) successful completion of the course review and the interview process, and (3) signing and submitting the corresponding current form of the Scrum Alliance CST agreement (the "CST Agreement").
Please be aware that the application fee is nonrefundable.
These instructions will guide you through the process of submitting the CST application with the proper documentation. The completed application and all corresponding documentation will be treated as confidential and distributed to Scrum Alliance-authorized reviewers only. Scrum Alliance has a review team, the Trainer Approval Community ("TAC"), tasked with evaluating all CST applications. To ensure the confidentiality of your application materials, the TAC team members sign non-disclosure agreements, requiring them to maintain the confidentiality of all application materials. (Any course material submitted in connection with this application shall be and remain the sole property of the applicant, submitted hereby under a non-exclusive license to Scrum Alliance for use in connection with this application. Please see the CST Agreement, available upon request, for additional information.)

- Certified Scrum Trainers are expected to have extensive hands-on, real-world experience serving on Scrum teams inside organizations as a ScrumMaster, product owner, or team member.
- Through your key learnings expressed in the document, you should demonstrate your deep knowledge and understanding of Scrum.
- Personal Statement:
- Please create a document to concisely share why Scrum inspires you and what motivates you to share that inspiration with others.
- Your personal statement should answer WHY you are applying to become a CST.
- Course Material
- If your course materials are not in English, please provide translation.
- You may be training with materials that were co-created or are proprietary to your company/employer. For the purpose of evaluating your Scrum knowledge, we ask that you please submit course materials that you developed, and which belong to you. We want to see you, and your story, come across in your materials. We need to know what YOU know (vs. the collective knowledge of your company/colleagues).
- Materials may include a slide deck, handouts, workbooks, manuals, study guides, lesson plans, a course outline or syllabus, class exercise descriptions, group activities, learning projects, or other learning aids.
- The submitted materials should convey, and provide a narrative of, what the experience would be as a student in your class.
- The submitted course materials must align with the Scrum Guide.
- If your materials include topics or elements outside of Scrum (as outlined in the Scrum Guide), these topics/elements should be clearly highlighted so that reviewers can accurately assess your understanding of the Scrum framework. For example, past applicants have created a special symbol/call-out icon for slide deck pages or other materials to identify non-Scrum topics/elements.
- If you are "training from the back of the room" or using another collaborative training approach, please ensure that you demonstrate the learning objectives are covered by providing at least two of the following:
- Learning artifacts from class
- Photos of flip charts/in-class notes
- Outline of your curriculum/narrative, including lesson plans
- Class exercises and/or activities
- Small group discussion prompts
- Game results/outcomes
- Please ensure that proper credit is given for ideas that are not your own by citing sources. Proper attribution must be given when using trademarked/copyrighted material. Also request permission(s) when appropriate for photos, illustrations, etc.
- CST consideration is based on review of your ScrumMaster course material. Approved CSTs may submit CSPO course materials for review and approval.
- Please note: CSPO submissions must follow the same guidlines as indicated above for CSM.

- The Applicant must provide information demonstrating successful instruction of at least 10 multi-day ScrumMaster training sessions with a minimum of 100 students in total. The training sessions can be achieved through the following:
- Non-certified ScrumMaster courses taught using the course materials presented in the application. Non-certified courses allow you to practice, develop your stage craft, and improve how you deliver information and educate students.
- Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) courses through co-training with a CST. To count towards the 10-course minimum, the applicant should have delivered at least 50 percent of the co-training).
- A "multi-day" training session is delivered over two or more consecutive days. Consecutive multi-day trainings demonstrate the ability of a trainer to sustain energy and re-engage students during the second day of class.
- CO-TRAINING thoughts/guidelines:
- Past applicants have reported that co-training has been an invaluable mentoring experience.
- The ideal way to pursue co-training opportunities is to network and build relationships within the CST community. If it is difficult to make introductions through email, consider attending a Global Gathering in order to build connections. An idea shared at a recent CST Info Session was to attend a Gathering and sign up for a session at the Coaches Clinic.
- Recommendations from one or more CSTs, based on co-training experience, are particularly compelling. CST recommendations provide a unique opportunity for feedback regarding the combination of Scrum knowledge and training ability. As subject-matter experts, CSTs can comment on your Scrum knowledge better than clients, students, colleagues, Agilists, etc.
- We recognize that not every applicant is in a position to co-train. In those cases we ask that the applicant submit other evidence of Scrum training ability, such as video (please see #11).
- Scrum Alliance does not recommend or endorse paying for co-training opportunities, advice, or recommendations.
- If you meet the Scrum Experience application requirements, have developed your own ScrumMaster course materials, and wish to explore co-training opportunities and mentoring connections in the CST community, please contact email@example.com.
- Student Feedback
- Please submit complete* student feedback from a MAXIMUM of four courses completed in the last year.
- *Hard-copy forms (scanned) or online survey data.
- If the feedback is not in English, please provide translation.
- Ensure that your name and the date of the training appears on your feedback forms. We need to be able to link the feedback provided to you as the trainer.
- If co-training, you should provide students with your own feedback form so that they have an opportunity to comment directly on YOUR skills, independent from those of the CST.
- You should select courses that show the most comments related to you as a trainer (even if the comments are critical).
- Your feedback (and any supporting documentation regarding your feedback process) should illustrate your journey of continuous improvement and your commitment to inspect/adapt/experiment.
- Please submit at least 5 Letters of Recommendation.
- Each recommendation should be submitted as a signed document (preferably on letterhead) with the author's contact information listed. Recommendations submitted in email format will not be accepted.
- Please avoid providing letters from individuals with whom you have a vested business relationship.
- Recommendations should concentrate specifically on two areas of focus: Scrum knowledge and training ability. Recommendation authors should be specific and provide examples from observed training modules, student engagements, and/or classroom management.
- Understandably so, clients cannot validate Scrum knowledge. They can, however, speak to your training ability and should describe training techniques and skills -- situations and moments where you shine as a trainer.
- If you do not provide a recommendation from a CST with whom you have co-trained, please provide an explanation as to why this recommendation is not available.
- Please be aware that Scrum Alliance will follow up directly with recommendation authors.
- Thought Leadership & Community Involvement Summary
- Certified Scrum Trainers are expected to be engaged global ambassadors of Scrum who have been engaged in the community at least two years in advance of CST application submission.
- Please create a document detailing your thought leadership and community contribution to the Scrum community:
- Speaking engagements
- Publications (books, articles, blog posts, informative/transforming discussions on forums, etc.)
- Servant leadership (volunteering within the Scrum community, local community building, user groups, etc.)
- For validation purposes, please provide URLs for user/meet-up groups, blogs, etc.
- Current CSP Certification: Please provide a copy of a current non-expired CSP-SM™ or CSP-PO™ certificate.
- Optional: Video
- Please ensure that your video segments are short (ideally under five minutes).
- The most effective video segments will highlight you in interesting/important interactions with students (e.g., answering a difficult question, demonstrating your knowledge and expertise on an important Scrum topic, turning the class around, etc.).
- Please provide an invitation to a Dropbox (or comparable) folder containing the video files or a document with video link(s) (YouTube or comparable site).

Fees due after application is approved:
- CST Yearly Fee: $5,000.00 USD yearly fee
The yearly fee for designation of a CST is $5000.00, due and payable to Scrum Alliance upon its approval of your CST certification. The fee for CST is due yearly.
- Fee Per Student: $50.00 USD/student
The fee per CSM or CSPO course student is $50.00 per student per course.
