Agile Leadership, The Key to Scaling Scrum

Are you trying to implement SAFe, LeSS, DAD, or some other scaling method and not getting the traction that you desire? Every Agile scaling method has its value; unfortunately most leave out a key ingredient for your success, Agile Leadership. Agile leaders create Agile cultures by; setting compelling visions and communicating priorities effectively, empowering teams and focusing on their results, influencing individuals and coaching their growth. Agile leaders are; vulnerable and not afraid to express their emotions, focused on growth and always inspecting and adapting, and they are passionate and caring about their team members. It’s leaders like these, true Agile Leaders, that create positive cultures and provide the necessary environment for which an organization can truly live the values and principles of the Agile Manifesto. Come learn how you can use Agile Leadership in order to grow, scale, and thrive as a true Agile organization.

    Tuesday PechaKucha Speakers

    Scott Dunn

Scott Dunn leads Rocket Nine, a small agile coaching and training company in Southern California after happy, golden years previously coaching at Rally and BigVisible.

He is passionate about helping people and teams grow. His kryptonite is details (and PowerPoint). He tries very hard to practice what he preaches, and fails often (but fast!), especially when using Scrum with his wife and four children. Before R9, he was a developer, manager and engagement manager.

He was an English major in college and now applies those skills in writing his bio so taut and compelling that even Hemingway would be proud.

    Marcus Garrido

Marcos Garrido is a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) and Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC) with more than 15 year experience in IT projects and has been working with Agile Teams since 2008. He also teaches Scrum to MBA Students of the Business School at the Catholical University in Rio de Janeiro and Lean Startup, Management 3.0 and Facilitation techniques everywhere else. He's an active member of Lean and Agile community, with a strong interest in the challenges of Agile transformation and product management. Garrido spoke at a number of events around the globe, including six major Scrum Gatherings and the most relevant conferences in Brazil. He's also the chair for the upcoming Regional Scrum Gathering Rio 2016. Besides training, Garrido has strong coaching skills, helping Product Owners, ScrumMasters and Developers to improve their techniques, achieving outstanding results.

    TITLE: Agile Upward and Outward

Agile has been a hot and trending methodology in the software industry for quite some time now. In fact, Agile has increasingly been appearing in mainstream publications touting success in non-software project settings. Given its success, Agile is extending well beyond software development and into business functions, and its ability to adapt to other areas has caught on.

In this session you will hear perspectives as to how Agile principles are moving upward through leadership levels and outward across multiple departments encompassing various types of effort, including strategy, planning, and marketing.

Through this session you will gain a better appreciation of how Agile extends beyond the technology realm and an understanding of how leaders in various industries have adopted Agile principles effectively.

  • Open Space Guidelines

    Jump to HyperSpace:

    Facilitated by Ellen Grove

On the third day of the Scrum Gathering, we’ll come together in Open Space to focus our energies on the topics that you are most passionate about. Our mission: to explore new ideas, seek out new insights and connections, and to boldly go forth into spontaneous collaboration. With no predetermined agenda or expectations, together we will cocreate the marketplace to facilitate the exchange of knowledge throughout the day. Whether you have expertise and experience to share, a desire to dig deeper into something you discovered earlier in the week, or you simply want to soak in an atmosphere of creativity and collaboration and maybe engage in an interesting conversation - the possibilities are unlimited.

A Brief Guide to Open Space for Novice Voyagers:

How do I propose an Open Space session?
    • Imagine a topic: an idea, a challenge, a question you care about it. Anyone can propose a session!
    • During the Opening Circle, grab an index card and a marker.
    • Write your topic on the card, and your name in the corner.
    • Announce your topic then post it in the Marketplace to indicate a time and location for gathering to explore this idea.

The Four Principles of Open Space
    • Whoever comes are the right people. The people who care will be the people who come to take part in the conversation.
    • Whatever happens is the only thing that could have.  Be prepared to be surprised.
    • Whenever it starts is the right time.  Inspiration and creativity don’t run on the clock.
    • When it’s over it’s over.  Do the work til it’s done, don’t work to the clock.

The Only Law of Open Space - the Law of Mobility:
    • If at any time during our time together you find yourself in a situation where you are neither learning or contributing, go someplace else.  You are responsible for your own learning.  If your mind wanders, take your body with it.

On Day 3 we will create a space for an open agenda to be filled with your session ideas and interests. In a marketplace setting, you can run an informal session on any topic you are passionate about, discuss what you have learned in the week or just listen. It is your choice to spend the day learning in the way that works best for you.
