Biography

Mark Grove

I am a coach and champion for individuals, teams, and organizations seeking innovative and effective ways to enhance personal and professional value in the work they do.

I work with software development teams to employ agile best practices in order to maximize business performance and team potential while continuously delivering value to the customer. I provide coaching and facilitation expertise for a variety of agile practices including release and sprint planning, backlog grooming, sprint reviews, and retrospectives. I also create and deliver training on a variety of agile topics.

Currently, I am responsible for providing agile coaching support to sotware development teams in both private and federal organizations. My support includes working closely with teams to improve team processes and strengthen patterns used within daily scrum, sprint planning, sprint backlog grooming, and retrospectives. In addition, I have also designed and delivered numerous interactive training sessions to agile project managers, product owners, SMEs, and delivery and value teams. These trainings focused on a broad range of agile topics including agile overview, agile planning and estimating, acceptance criteria creation, product owner overview, and user story creation. I also mentor and work one-on-one with project managers charged with transitioning to agile team leads. In this capacity, I highlight the importance of using real-time delivery metrics such as Velocity, Burndown and Cumulative Flow to facilitate the delivery of functionality with the greatest business value first. My coaching and mentoring focuses on the significance of self-organization, servant leadership, and the mindset to welcome and embrace change even late in the development stage.

Before becoming an agile coach, I worked for a large IT consulting company as a scrum master and agile project manager. In this capacity, I was responsible for the facilitation of daily scrum, sprint planning, sprint review, and sprint retrospective meetings. I used various tools such as Atlassian’s Jira Greenhopper to facilitate collaboration with a distributed team for the purpose of grooming the backlog, planning sprints, and creating and tracking user stories. I also maintained and reported on various metrics to trend velocity, determine value earned, and forecast completion dates.

Prior to working in the agile space, I served as an IT project manager successfully leading numerous software and web development projects comprising multidisciplinary through all phases of the software development life cycle. As a PM, I managed budget, resource planning, and staff allocation to ensure financial stability and projections meet fiscal objectives, including anticipated profitability ranges and return on sales. Planned out yearly revenue and expenses to ensure the completion of all project requirements were on time and within budget.

Before moving to an a agile framework for software development, I was an IT project manager following more traditional waterfall approaches employing the software development life-cycle. Note these are not in conflict with one another.
