Benny Baggott - I am a Certified Scrum Master and Agile Coach for Omnicell, Inc. in Nashville, TN. I have worked in the IT industry for 25 years as a developer, architect, project manager and applications development manager. In April 2009 my software development team formally implemented Scrum and I knew that I would never go back to the old way of doing things. Through self-organization, with support from our stakeholders, my team accomplished things that we could have never dreamed of with me directing the work.
I began my Agile career by leading Ingram's Agile transformation and acting as my team's Scrum Master from April 2009 to October 2012. I also led a variety of training sessions with different levels of the company, including Scrum Overview, User Story writing, and Agile Estimation.
The early adoption of Agile and Scrum by my team and the success and improvement that we were able to demonstrate, led to the company to encourage other software development teams to adopt Scrum. This provided me with the opportunity to teach additional teams and work with new Scrum Masters to build effective Scrum adoptions of their own. This effectively positioned me as the company’s Agile Evangelist. I’m proud to say that the company’s Agile adoption has continued to grow and flourish long after my departure from the company.
My Scrum Coach at Ingram was Tommy Norman, who continues to be a mentor of mine to this day. Tommy had taken a primary leadership interest in the Nashville Agile User’s Group and asked me to help with the organization and leadership to get me more involved in the local Agile community and to help share the load. This has resulted in my leading several of the presentations and speaking to several groups in town, including the IIBA and the PMI Agile Community of Practice groups.
I am currently serving as an internal enterprise Agile Coach for a hardware and software development company in the Healthcare space. Omnicell has software development shops in Mountain View, CA, Nashville, TN, and St. Petersburg, FL, with its headquarters being in Mountain View. I enjoy working with all levels of the company and throughout the value stream to move the company and its teams further along its path to Agile maturity. My role calls for me to work with all levels and areas of the business to move our Agile adoption forward. I serve as Scrum Master for two teams, though I have temporarily served as Scrum Master for 10 separate teams during my tenure with the company. I lead the Scrum Master and Product Owner communities of practice. I lead Scrum training as needed.
My new position has given me the opportunity to work with more teams and more levels of the company. Traveling to the Silicon Valley area frequently has allowed me to get involved in the Agile communities their, specifically the Silicon Valley Agile Leadership Network, and the Scrum Professionals – San Mateo groups.
I have also made a presentation on Scrum at a major Software company’s annual customer conference (JDA Software’s Focus), which was very well received. I am looking forward to presenting at next year’s Agile2015 conference in Washington, DC. Agile software development and the Scrum framework has resonated with me in such a deep and natural way that I really do feel that it is part of my mindset and values today. I have found incredible support and friendship within the Agile community and have a strong desire to contribute and be a big part of that community.
When I am not solving business problems with IT solutions and help teams find better ways to develop software solutions, I am most frequently on my Harley with my knees in the breeze. I love doing anything with my family, from competing in martial arts tournaments, to winning national championship in paintball, to just hanging out and catching up. Music is an important part of my life and my personal means of expression is my guitar.
