Our speaker for the February 24, 2016, Learning Consortium webinar was Bill Fischer, professor of innovation management at IMD.

Bill discussed what innovation involves with particular reference to the experience of the Haier Group, which is in discussion to buy the appliance group of General Electric.

At Haier, management is highly attuned to major trends sweeping across the global economic landscape, compelling organizations to respond. Given such developments, Haier Group CEO Zhang Ruimin believes that organizations should pursue speed, openness, freedom from boundaries, and value-ecosystem opportunity. He sees organizational platforms as the natural way to do this, enabling the removal of all organizational barriers.

Bill Fischer is a professor of innovation management at IMD. He cofounded and codirects the IMD program on Driving Strategic Innovation, in cooperation with the Sloan School of Management at MIT. He also authors a regular column for entitled The Ideas Business ( He first joined IMD in 1990 and was part of its team that developed the Managerial Deep Dive process for improved innovation conversations.
