Advanced Scrum Mastery: Deepening Your Craft

Why This Course Exists

Scrum Masters spend years learning how to facilitate events, guide teams, and keep the wheels turning — and eventually, we discover the real work lives outside the events entirely.

This course is for practitioners who are ready to make the shift:

From running events to shaping the system those events sit in.

If your goal is to help your teams create sustainable value, improve the way work flows, and influence the environment around your teams, you’re in the right place. This class builds on the fundamentals and expands your ability to work at the system level — where alignment, flow, and culture actually change.

My own why is simple:

I’m making a better, more sustainable world by helping others build teams that deliver sustainable value.

CSP-SM is designed for people who feel that same pull.

What You Will Learn

In our live online sessions, you will deepen your craft in five areas:

1. Seeing the Whole System

Move beyond team-level mechanics and learn to spot systemic patterns, invisible impediments, organizational misalignments, and coordination gaps that drag delivery down.

2. Facilitating Beyond the Basics

Use advanced facilitation patterns, Training-from-the-Back-of-the-Room design, and real-world structures (not ceremony scripts) to create learning, clarity, and movement.

3. Strengthening Alignment and Flow

Understand how Product Owner decision integrity connects to Scrum Master flow integrity, and use practical collaboration techniques to help teams move together instead of in parallel.

4. Working With Real-World Complexity

Explore Sidney’s “Sprint in the Life” scenarios to learn how advanced Scrum Masters navigate tension, influence stakeholders, and maintain momentum across shifting environments.

5. Growing Your Professional Practice

Build a coaching stance, increase your range of intervention options, and develop the judgment needed to act with integrity at the team and organizational level.

What You Will Be Able to Do

After this class, you will be able to:

  • Diagnose systemic impediments and design interventions that support sustainable flow

  • Facilitate more effectively across teams, not just within a single team

  • Strengthen alignment between purpose, decisions, and delivery

  • Apply advanced patterns and tools (including two Gorilla Coach canvases) to real situations

  • Operate with greater confidence when stakes are high or context is unclear

  • Support your teams in creating sustainable value — not just velocity

Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for anyone who already uses the skills of a Scrum Master in their day-to-day work, regardless of job title:

  • Scrum Masters

  • Agile practitioners and hybrid-role leaders

  • Product-adjacent roles guiding delivery in complex systems

  • People who coach, coordinate, influence, or enable teams

If you’ve completed foundational Scrum training (CSM and A-CSM) and are ready to grow your ability to support sustainable value, this course will meet you where you are — and stretch you further.

How the Course Works

Live, Interactive, and Hands-On

This class is taught live online using Zoom and Miro.

No lecture marathons. No death-by-PowerPoint.

You’ll work with real scenarios, collaborate in small groups, and learn by doing.

Workshop Hours

Each day is a four-hour session

  • Jan 26: 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm PT (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm ET)

  • Jan 27: 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm PT (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm ET)

  • Jan 28: 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm PT (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm ET)

  • Jan 29: 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm PT (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm ET)

A key to good facilitation is taking breaks. Attendees need mental space to stay engaged and collaborate effectively. We also know that this applies to learning. Each hour, we will take a ten-minute refresher break. These times are fixed, and you can count on them.

Meet Your Instructor

Joel Bancroft-Connors — The Gorilla Coach

Certified Scrum Trainer. Team Coach. Facilitator.

Joel brings a lifetime of working with teams to this class. He started his professional career in the early 1990s, spent more than twenty years in product and program leadership, and has spent the last sixteen immersed in Agile and coaching. That breadth gives him a rare vantage point — he’s seen how work actually gets done across industries, eras, and org structures, and he knows what helps teams thrive in the real world.

He teaches with clarity, candor, and a deep respect for practitioners who want to grow beyond mechanics. As a facilitator and coach, he draws on systems thinking, Training from the Back of the Room, and practical experience with hundreds of teams. He is also the creator of Sprint in the Life series, the Scaling Canvas, and a set of Gorilla Coach tools used by Scrum Masters and Agilists worldwide.

Students describe his workshops as grounded, insightful, and immediately useful. His goal is simple: help people shape environments where sustainable value is possible — and give advanced Scrum Masters the judgment and range they need to navigate complexity with confidence.
