Early attempts to use Lean methods in product development simplistically copied the ideas of Lean Manufacturing. They assumed that variability should be elimited. Unfortunately, this is neither feasible nor desirable in product development. In development, where innovation adds value, uncertainty is the perpetual traveling companion of innovation – therefore, we can’t eliminate uncertainty without eliminating innovation. Fortunately, another approach is available.
Don is the President of Reinertsen & Associates, a consulting firm specialized in the management of product development.
