web headerDeveloped and delivered by Hubert Smits, Certified Scrum Trainer and Cutter Senior Consultant; and Lynn Winterboer, Cutter Senior Consultant Product Owners for agile Business Intelligence (BI) teams often face unique challenges compared to their peers on other delivery teams. The role of Product Owner (PO) on an agile team carries substantial responsibilities. The Product Owner must do the following: Identify the business needs Write and groom good user stories that accurately reflect the drivers and details of each need Prioritize the user stories into a backlog But, these responsibilities are only a portion of what a Business Intelligence PO must do. The Product Owner for a single BI team that supports multiple business functions, such as sales, finance, service and HR, has a bigger challenge. His or her challenges, beyond what other Product Owners face, include: Understanding the drivers and values of each business function in order to groom strong user stories Prioritizing stories across these multiple business functions to come up with a ranked backlog that represents the organization's overall priorities.

What You'll Learn In this two-day course, Cutter Senior Consultants Lynn Winterboer, a seasoned data professional and agile analytics trainer, and Hubert Smits will provide you with an understanding of the Product Owner role as defined by the Scrum Alliance -- specifically as it relates to the challenges often faced by BI Product Owners. You'll learn how to: Shape the initial vision for a program Establish an Agile roadmap for program success Use Innovation Games for ideation, convergence, and prioritization Write strong DW/BI user stories Slice BI/DW development into small chunks of business value Identify and understand users, their roles, and personas Leverage use cases to develop strong user stories Directly impact quality as a Product Owner Groom stories in the backlog so they are ready for the agile team Estimate and prioritize user stories Plan and commit to an iteration Demonstrate working DW/BI features to the stakeholder community
HubertWe look into the world of requirements management and visit the concepts of Stories and Epics. We also cast an eye on modern estimating techniques; probably play a game of planning poker.

Your trainer has been in these situations and will talk and show examples from his experience. There is plenty of opportunity to discuss your situation: the actual project structure that you work in, or additional roles in your project. We will share and discuss background materials and articles, like the “Five Levels of Planning” paper, and the experience report “Complexity at Cisco”.

If you would like to taste a sample of my talking style, try this video about roles in Scrum.

Though each CSPO course varies depending on the instructor, all Certified Scrum Product Owner® courses focus on Scrum from a product owner's perspective. Graduates will receive the CSPO designation. All CSPO courses are taught by Trainers approved by the Scrum Alliance.
