About the Course
Dates: 7th - 8th September, 2011 - just prior to Scrum Gathering South Africa
The Product Owner role is critical to maximising Return on Investment from agile projects and is one of the most challenging and rewarding agile roles. Many Product Owners come from business areas of the organisation and have limited familiarity with elements of software development, project management and agile methods that are critical to success in the Product Owner role. For these reasons, it is vitally important that Product Owners gain a solid understanding of their role and responsibilities as well as the knowledge, skills and tools to work effectively with Scrum teams.
This course is most suitable for Product Owners, Business Owners, Producers, business-focused Project Managers and staff assisting with requirements and their priority (e.g. Business Analysts and Subject Matter Experts), solution architecture (e.g. Solution Architects and Tech Leads), planning and coaching (e.g. ScrumMasters and Agile Coaches).
This course is taught by two highly experience trainers and practitioners, Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer Simon Bennett and Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Coach Karen Greaves.
Simon Bennett has over 20 years real-world experience in software and hardware development, and from 2008 through 2010 Simon was also the Product Owner for the Scrum for Team System TFS process template. He will be presenting at the Scrum Gathering South Africa and was the Chair of the Product Owner Panel at the Munich Scrum Gathering.
Simon has considerable experience in organisational agile adoption, large scale Scrum and using Scrum in an offshore environment, as well as successfully blending Scrum with other methods including UCD. Over the last 12 years have been focused on using Agile frameworks and methods including Scrum, XP, Crystal & Kanban. His wealth of experience and passion for Product Ownership brings a unique depth and flavour to the course, as students will learn from real world case studies rather than only theory and simulations.
Karen currently works for Fundamo helping their Product Development team do Scrum well and deliver mobile financial services to the world. She has hands on experience in roles of both ScrumMaster and Product Owner, and is well versed in the common challenges encountered by software teams adopting Scrum. She has worked in a number of large corporations including Microsoft, IBM and JP Morgan as well as smaller companies mostly in the financial services and telecoms domains.
Her background includes many years as a project and program manager using more traditional approaches like RUP and V-Model. In her career Karen has been certified as a PMP and Prince2 Practitioner. She can offer insights about the benefits of moving from these more traditional approaches to Scrum, and can help relate the benefits of Scrum in terms well understood by experienced project managers.
Karen is also an experienced speaker and has given the following talks to the agile community:
"Taming the Customer Support Queue" at Agile2011 Salt Lake City coming August 2011
"Agile Management: Creating a culture to help your team succeed" at Agile2011 Salt Lake City coming August 2011
