Biography

Jerrold (Jerry) Walker

I started my Agile experience in 2006 when I was working for Hartford Life in Plymouth MN.  I read Mary and Tom Poppendek's book, "Lean Software Development: From concept to Cash"  and also attended a Lean Development workshop presented by Mary and Tom.  From that experience I began using the techniques she taught us and applied them to my work on new Insurance Products development.  I was the Program Manger within the Project Office leading the technology team in the development of new products and enhancements to existing products.  We were not yet Scrum at that time but using agile techniques that we learned from Mary.  I instituted shorter development cycles, automated testing scripts, daily stand-ups and process flow diagramming. I led the team similar to a ScrumMaster but really more like a PM. 

I obtained my CSM in 2013 in Minneapolis MN.  Since that time I have been working in multiple roles, as a ScrumMaster for multiple teams, a Scrum Coach, Trainer of the Thrivent Agile Fundamentals 2 day class, and an Agile advisor to leaders and executives across the enterprise. 

I authored the Agile Adoption strategy for Thrivent during the summer of 2013.

I began the Agile Adoption program in January of 2014 with the approval and funding from the Chief Administrative Officer.

I have assisted 50 teams launch successfully as Scrum teams between 2014 and mid-2017.

I'm currently the Director of Enterprise Business Enablement and Agile Office.

I introduced Scrum to the team working on strategic changes within the HR division. I helped them pivot the effort for a project that was using a traditional waterfall approach. We developed a vision for the effort and organized the work into teams to deliver value as rapidly as possible. We defined a minimum a viable product for the first release. This project was a good mix of business and technology deliverables. The success of this effort was a catalyst for the expansion of Scrum within more of the HR team.

We implemented a new marketing technology that our Financial Advisors were able to use for email marketing. I helped the team move from a traditional waterfall approach to Scrum. This was a successful project and first experience using Scrum for a number of team members and leaders. This group continues to use Scrum and the agile mindset in their marketing programs.
