Jon Fulton is an experienced Agile / Lean practitioner, coach and servant leader with a proven track record, working with multiple teams using Scrum, Kanban and eXtreme Programming practices.
Jon is a keen student of literature around Lean and Agile as well as a regular attendee at events in the Agile community. On occasion he contributes as a speaker on subjects such as building self organising teams and product development flow.
His aim is to be a servant leader and systems thinker, while continuously deepening an understanding of how we can work together to deliver software.
Jon’s career in Agile approaches began as a software developer. He became responsible for teams and projects for a company developing software for revenue collection. Discovering a passion for finding better ways of working, he introduced Agile to the organisation to great success. The company went from 4 to 24 deliveries a year to the delight of customers, who benefited from more features, less bugs and higher performance.
He then became involved in a Waterfall to Agile transition for a software company developing software for the leisure market, this transition was key to the timely delivery of important software for the London Olympic park which provided ticketing and turnstile entry to the Aquatics Centre.
During this time Jon began to leave his development roots behind to focus solely on a Scrum Master / Agile Coach career path, but still found time to advocate Agile development techniques and software craftsmanship.
Jon then moved into the high volume online gambling arena at Sky Betting and Gaming, where just a regular Saturday sees higher volumes than a large retailer would see during ‘Black Friday’. Here, Lean and Agile methods are not just beneficial; they are vital to success in this highly competitive market place.
He worked with the teams responsible for the SkyBet website on desktop and mobile, delivering many high profile features, harnessing agile methods to deliver value in time for various sporting events and maximise value from continuous delivery.
Jon pioneered new ways of working with the SkyBet teams by blending Scrum and Kanban and developing a culture of metric driven continuous improvement, which was described by a leading Agile consultant as ‘spectacular’.
He began building communities of practice, leading the development of the SkyBet ‘Lean/Agile Guild’ in which Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Business Analysists and Developers come together to share ideas and listen to talks from visiting industry leading speakers such as Chris McDermott and Dragon Jojic. He has also founded the Leeds Lean Coffee group, comprised of members from companies across Leeds, who meet regularly at a local coffee shop and spend an hour discussing all things Lean and Agile.
As for the future, Jon’s ambition is to continue to help build Leeds as a centre of excellence for Lean and Agile software development by building great teams, helping organisations and users get more value form software development, contributing to the many great communities in the city and regularly blogging and tweeting about his journey along the way.
