Biography

I am a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) with a wide range of experience working on Agile projects as a Scrum Master (Iteration Manager) and within Agile teams. I have a particular interest in web and mobile-based technologies and have over 18 years in the IT industry.

I have experience of bottom-up business transformation following my championing, introduction and evolution of Agile development processes within a formerly fully Waterfall organisation. I have also led the introduction of a new Agile team following top-down intent to introduce faster time-to-market; as their ScrumMaster I led the evolution of new processes for discovery, refinement and delivery of work, coached the team to work more collaboratively and to self-govern, while delivering to stakeholder expectation.

I am a member of Agile groups both within my company (which I helped to start) and in the Bristol/Bath community. I am highly professional, organised and approachable; these qualities combined with a natural flare for problem solving and an “agile evangelist” mind-set have helped me to fulfil my ScrumMaster roles. My enthusiasm and commitment to quality motivates those working for me and inspires customer confidence. My outgoing persona, pro-active communication approach and calm attitude help me to get the best out of everyone around me, whether they are young engineers or senior customers. I aim to succeed as a ScrumMaster by building and utilising relationships across organisations to help identify people or processes which I can later call upon to remove impediments for my team.

Work experience

Nationwide Building Society, ScrumMaster, Banking App Agile Team
December 2016 - Present, Swindon, Wiltshire, GB
I led the introduction of a new Agile team tasked with rapidly delivering new features for the existing Tablet-enabled Banking App; this involved defining and evolving new processes for discovery, refinement and delivery of work and the formation of a Banking App Agile Team. I was the ScrumMaster for this team; I taught them how to work within the Scrum framework and coached them to work together collaboratively while following their own self-determined rules, all the time delivering to stakeholder expectation. This team included capability to quickly design, build and integration test new features, allowing us to take a concept on our backlog through discovery and refinement, design, build and integration test during our sprint before putting the feature live.

Nationwide Building Society, ScrumMaster, Next Generation Banking App Development Team
February 2015 - November 2016, Swindon, Wiltshire, GB
I was one of the ScrumMasters of the Next Generation Banking app development team who were responsible for building the society's new Tablet-enabled Banking app using Agile techniques. We had two Scrum teams in the UK and four offshore in India. I also acted as coach for a new ScrumMaster who joined our UK team.

Nationwide Building Society, ScrumMaster, Mobile Banking App Development Team
September 2013 - January 2015, Swindon, Wiltshire
I was the ScrumMaster of the Mobile Banking team who were responsible for building and maintaining the society's Mobile Banking app. In time we grew to three Scrum teams within the Mobile Banking space and I was asked to help recruit and ultimately coach two new ScrumMasters. I also provided high level analysis, helping to define and refine business requirements while helping with project planning and estimation.

Nationwide Building Society, ScrumMaster and Agile Champion, Internet Bank Development Team
January 2012 - August 2013, Swindon, Wiltshire, United Kingdom
I defined and rolled out a Scrum implementation in an otherwise Waterfall organisation. I was the ScrumMaster working with my new Scrum team who were responsible for building and maintaining the society's Internet Bank, Part of my aim was to expand the profile of Agile within the department and expand the use of Scrum. Over time the department grew and I coached several new ScrumMasters in to their new roles as we increased the number of Scrum teams. I also provided high level analysis, helping to define and refine business requirements while helping with project planning and estimation.

Nokia Music, Tech Lead & ScrumMaster Cover, Nokia Comes With Music Project
May 2009 - December 2009, Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom
I worked as a Tech Lead and stand-in ScrumMaster for a Scrum team on a project which aimed to rebuild Nokia's "Comes With Music" website, a music download site offering free music to people who bought Nokia phones. Nokia Music reorganised all of its developers and testers in to new Scrum teams to work on a new architecture based around RESTful services, built by 8 Scrum teams. These services were consumed by the UI which was built by a further 2 Scrum teams. The Architects remained in their own team, providing high level design guidance to the Scrum teams. NOTE: Nokia Music later because known as Mix Radio, after they were sold by Nokia.

Nokia Music, Test Engineer within Scrum Team
May 2008 - February 2009, Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom
I was an automated test engineer within a Scrum team working on the "Comes With Music" website project which aimed to offer free music downloads to anyone buying a Nokia mobile phone. NOTE: Nokia Music later because known as Mix Radio, after they were sold by Nokia.
