Infographic: Project Manager versus ScrumMaster

The easiest way to understand the project manager versus ScrumMaster debate

3 March 2016

Recently I was coaching a group of project managers toward Agile adoption. Almost all of them were worried because they had heard that Agile/Scrum doesn't have a role called "project manager." I wanted to assure them that their expertise and experience is required, but that they need to do things a little differently. After much thought, I came up with this infographic to summarize the differences so they can easily adapt and work with the team. It makes them feel that they are not redundant in the organization.

Since I got very positive feedback about infographic from the group of project-managers-would-be-ScrumMasters, I thought I would share it with larger community.

Good graphic. But I do not think that all traditional project managers think in the way it is depicted here.

Nice infographic, I won't share that with any PM's though as it may upset them a little. I think I agree with Dewang though in that the modern project manager does appear to be more agile in thinking. I've notice though that quite often they become a bit of a hybrid PO/CSM but with a tendency to lean on the PO side with PM ideas. Its a shame though as the CSM role is an important one and makes a huge difference if you have a good one.

This infographic is great! Thank you for the gift, it is beautiful and easy.

I appreciate Dewang and Tony's feedback, because that was my first thought -- but looking at the infographic again, what I see depicted is waterfall leadership versus agile leadership.

See, like in any model, you can have any individual living on either side of the infographic. Thoughtful PMs could be on the right side, and controlling CSMs could be on that left side. Taking it to the leadership level, well that gives us models to come back to.

I'm definitely using the thoughts and ideas in my work and evangelizing. You rock!
