When we begin our Agile journey, there can be a tendency to be genuinely fascinated to be associated with popular Agile terms in our daily work lives. It is, perhaps, the normal fascination of being associated with trends considered exciting all over the globe.

Let's look at an Agile beginner adopting Scrum. The beginner brings the three roles into the project: ScrumMaster, product owner, and team member. The team starts working with Scrum; three months pass and it is time for the quarterly performance review. Can we guess whether the performance review will deliver outstanding, average, or poor results? The answer lies in knowing what was indeed done in those three months by each of the three roles.
Let us assume that the team focused 100% on Agile execution, practiced the Agile principles in essence, and helped each other ease into the roles. And to top it all off, they had a dedicated Agile coach to mentor them.
With this information, it would be safe to guess that the team delivered outstanding results, particularly if the performance review aimed to assess the Agile adoption rather than simply the achievement of myriad other tasks undertaken during that adoption. When beginning our Agile journey, it is best to focus on the guidelines and principles, to focus on what we intend to achieve (Agile adoption, or the first stage of it), and to then focus on how our execution matched this pursuit.
All this can happen while being fascinated by the new Agile terms. Embracing them wholeheartedly, and then measuring our first success by how well we managed that transition, is what's most important.
