As a developer I began my career on a CMMI level 4 project that used waterfall exclusively. I knew that I wanted to create software that filled the needs of the users that it was created for, and I knew that waterfall was NOT the way to do it. I then moved on to a new company that used a much more loose version of the waterfall methodology, and still didn't produce software that the users wanted. It was at this company that I was able to first use Scrum. A two year project was pitched to rewrite a major system, and the development team said it was only possible with Scrum. Two years later, not only was it possible, but it was one of the single greatest successes ever for the company. Scrum has taken off at the company, with many teams using the process to create better solutions faster. I played the role of a developer on the first team, and am now working both as a team member on my team, and in a coach capacity on other teams within the company.
