Petri Heiramo

I'm particularly interested in looking at Scrum and Agile as a holistic approach to improving the competitiveness of businesses. I find myself often in discussions where I emphasize the need for businesses to focus on generating value (over managing costs) as a means to success. Be it in a project or in an organization, I frequently see dysfunctions where silly savings are made at the cost of significant value. And many times the decisionmakers are totally unaware of the impact of their decisions. It is this mismatch between intent (to work for the best of the company) and action that I seek to eliminate. When focusing on value, we need to focus on customer delight, job satisfaction and continuous improvement.

Work history:

Most of my professional career, I've worked as a Process Development Manager at Digia, being responsible for the development of its software development processes, including the piloting, training and deployment of Scrum. Recently I founded Agilecraft Oy/Ltd, wanting to focus on the Agile part of my past responsibilities.

Scrum experience:

I've studied Agile methods actively since Fall 2005, trained and consulted Scrum and Agility since early 2006. I started, trained and supported many Agile and Scrum projects, and ScrumMastered some. I've spoken and trained Agility and Scrum to customers in many projects. I was certified as Scrum Practitioner in April 2007 and as CST in November 2008.

Other experience:

I have over 10 years of experience in developing software as a developer, project manager, QA manager, ScrumMaster, process developer, coach and trainer, both for traditional and Agile approach. I've seen a lot of different projects and as a result I've especially come to appreciate the effect of Scrum on the human side of software development. Seeing people enjoy their work again has been my greatest joy in Agile deployments. Of course, seeing a happy and engaged customer is great, too, and so is instilling new kind of pride and common sense in the work people do.

The ready-aim-fire also assumes, obviously, that a single aim-fire sequence is needed to successfully achieve the objective of the use of firearms. Very few occasions in military are like this. The tracer bullet is a good example of the use of fir...
On Can Scrum Support Six Sigma?
Personally, I've always been highly suspect of (Lean) Six Sigma, much to the reasons mentioned by Peter. SS is largely about reducing variation, which is one of the key control methods in (repetitive) production. Product creation, on the other han...
