    Observing and understanding complex systems

    Systems Thinking is an approach to understand the performance of an organization. It looks at the organization as a system which consist of interconnected parts. It is those parts together that create the characteristics of the entire system. Instead of looking at the parts in isolation, Systems Thinking takes a holistic view to understand how the parts fit together.

    W. Edwards Deming, the famous management thinker, has said: "A bad system will defeat a good person every time." Similarly, a bad system will defeat a good process framework. Indeed, many organizations struggling to deliver results with state of the art methods like Scrum or Kanban would benefit from looking at their organization through a systemic lens and seeking a holistic understanding of how all the parts of the system are working together — or against each other — to produce the results they're seeing.

    This two-day training familiarizes participants with the foundations of Systems Thinking and teaches practical techniques and mental models that help organizational catalysts act as a mirror and shed light on what's really going on in the organization. The first step on the way to better results is to see current system for what it is. With that knowledge we can identify and execute effective improvements that have a sustained impact.

    • How failure demand differs from value demand
    • How to approach non-linear cause-effect relations in a system

    • How a sustained improvement must involve a change in system conditions
