    The Course

"I've been in industry now for almost 20 years and in all that time, I've had only 3 or 4 training classes that I thought made a meaningful impact on my job or career. Jim's class is one of those."

In this two-day course, you will apply the Scrum framework to build a new product. You will learn what it feels like to be on a Scrum team—experiencing many of the challenges you're likely to face—while being coached by someone involved with the application of Scrum at many organizations. This “learning by doing” style of instruction demands your open mind and active participation.

We will apply the experiential activities to discussion of advanced topics such as how to use Scrum in multiple-team organizations, how to measure progress empirically at a macro level, release planning to maximize ROI, and why such a simple framework disrupts organizations to be the best they can be.

Participants who complete the course successfully will be designated “Certified ScrumMaster” (CSM). This certification includes a two-year membership in the Scrum Alliance, where additional Certified ScrumMaster-only material and information are available.

Food and refreshments are typically provided.

    The Instructor

Jim Schiel is a 26 year veteran of large-scale software engineering and product development, Certified Scrum Trainer, and author of "Enterprise Scale Agile Software Development" (November 2009, CRC Press), a handbook for all those looking to transition their product development organizations to Agile Development practices. Schiel, who began the largest transition to Agile Development ever attempted at the time (1,200+ employees, 7 products, and over 100 Scrum teams) and mentored the transition for four years, now freelances as the owner of his own company, Artisan Software Consulting, and has been helping other large organizations in the United States, Europe, and China achieve agility ever since. He literally wrote the book on the mechanics of large scale agile transitions!

Jim received his CSM, CSP, and CST certifications from Ken Schwaber, one of the two co-founders of the Scrum process.

All CSM courses are taught by Certified Scrum Trainers. Taking a CSM course, passing the CSM test, and accepting the license agreement designates you as a Certified ScrumMaster, which indicates that you have been introduced to and understand the basic concepts you need to perform as a ScrumMaster or team member on a Scrum team. This course also satisfies two elements of the CSD track: Scrum Introduction and Elective.

    Notes

Comments from some of Jim's previous students:

    • “Jim shows a genuine passion for the Scrum methodology. From the initial introduction, you can tell very easily that Jim is a real expert at Scrum. He takes an in-depth subject and breaks it down into understandable, realistic, and helpful lessons. He does more than just teach the subject. He gives you real world examples. He walks you through hands-on lessons, and all the while, he's there to answer any and every question with as much honesty and service orientation as possible. Jim brings personal caring service and an expert level of knowledge to his classes. I am forever grateful for Jim's leadership and teaching abilities."
    • "I've been in industry now for almost 20 years and in all that time, I've had only 3 or 4 training classes that I thought made a meaningful impact on my job or career. Jim's class is one of those. What makes his expertise on agile technologies meaningful is his hands-on experience. He has the practical experience and expertise to back up the theory. Combined with his witty and dynamic delivery of the material, it became a powerful impact to my job and has afforded me skills and techniques that I now use every day."
    • "Before attending the class, I thought I had a good general understand of the Agile methodology and Scrum, but Jim offered me much more. There was never a dull moment in the 2-day class, I thoroughly enjoyed his class and the fact it added value to my knowledge."
    • "[Jim] is one of those unique individuals capable of combining textbook theory with real-world experience in order to effectively convey Agile Methodologies. I thoroughly enjoyed his style of training and any company would benefit from Jim's expertise, sense of humor, and dedication.”
