This course is sponsored by the Scrum Training Institute and will be taught by Jeff Sutherland, Co-Creator of Scrum. The Scrum Alliance provides a list of core concepts that must be covered in the class, each instructor creates his or her own material, allowing courses to differ based on the strengths, interests and experiences of the instructor.
While this course will be taught in English, Jeff was VP of Engineering and then President of a French company for five years. He spent lots of time in Paris and speaks a little French. His French colleagues at Xebia who are Certified ScrumMasters will make sure all concepts are clarified in French.
The course will run from 9:00 to 17:00 Monday and Tuesday. Please arrive at 8:30 the first day for a continental breakfast.
In this course, participants will learn how to stop thrashing and start executing along with everything necessary for getting started with Scrum. There are very few rules to Scrum so it is important to learn its fundamental principles by experiencing them directly from those who have implemented the best Scrums in the software industry. Participants gain hands-on practice with the release backlog, sprint backlog, the daily Scrum meeting, tracking progress with a burndown chart and experience the Scrum process through a “59-minute Scrum” and the "XP Game” which simulate Scrum projects through non-technical group exercises.
The CSM course was formulated to train and certify ScrumMasters and is used worldwide for ScrumMaster training. Upon successful completion of the course and online certification exam, each participant is enrolled as a Certified ScrumMaster, which includes a one-year membership in the Scrum Alliance, where additional Certified ScrumMaster-only material and information are available.
You can receive 16 Professional Development Units (PDUs) for this course.
Participants will receive course materials for review at the start of the course. A course syllabus is available at http://jeffsutherland.com/csmsyllabus.pdf.
Participants should read The Scrum Handbook by Jeff Sutherland (downloadable for free at http://jeffsutherland.com/scrumhandbook.pdf) or Ken Schwaber’s book, Agile Project Management with Scrum before the class as we require you know the basic definitions of Scrum. Of course, there will be updated material and training exercises in the course which you cannot get from books.
All CSM courses are taught by Certified Scrum Trainers. Taking a CSM course, passing the CSM test, and accepting the license agreement designates you as a Certified ScrumMaster, which indicates that you have been introduced to and understand the basic concepts you need to perform as a ScrumMaster or team member on a Scrum team. This course also satisfies two elements of the CSD track: Scrum Introduction and Elective.
