Biography

I'm an Agile Coach & Scrum Master, passionate about people, agile and technology. A software developer at heart, enthusiast of open-source and modern programming languages. Deep understanding of project, portfolio and program management, coaching, mentoring, and team-building, without overlooking the technical aspects of software development. Recently, I have been working in creating high-volume web applications and portals for a big media conglomerate.

I'm a fast learner, and I'm always willing to learn and re-learn everything all over again. I believe that there's no 'right way' to do something, only different ways, and I strongly believe that there's no progress without change.

I love to give speeches and teach, spreading the word on Agile, XP, Open-source, Management, and I've consistently been doing this over the past years. Most of my talks are recorded, so if you speak portuguese you can check them out on my portuguese blog, macaubas.com.

Work experience

Globo.com, Agile Software Development Manager
May 2010 - Present, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil
As a Software Development Manager for the Webmedia group of Globo.com, I got to manage the four development teams responsible for the delivery of the video platform of Globo.com. I am the technical manager and agile coach for the four teams in the group. I am also responsible for recruiting, team building, and coaching of Team Members, Scrum Masters and Product Owners. I'm deeply involved with the technical aspects of delivering an online video platform - from encoding to end-user delivery, on desktop and mobile devices. I'm also responsible for helping fellow Scrum Masters, Product Managers and Product Owners to organise, evolve and maintain our project portfolio and programs. By doing this, we keep our executive management up to date on the progress of the projects & programs, and to create and maintain metrics to track our projects and project portfolio.

Globo.com, Scrum Master
June 2009 - May 2010, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil
I was Scrum Master for one of the teams responsible for the G1 news portal, one of the biggest news portals in the world, and the biggest in Latin America. During the time I've been Scrum Master of this team, we consistently delivered a new version of the portal, doing a total transition away from a Java-based to a new, Python-based CMS. I also was one of the champions of the implementation of XP Practices within this team - I helped the team to start practicing pair-programming, TDD, BDD and installing its first Continuous Integration server. I was also responsible for recruiting, and because of that added key people to the team, always maintaining the cross-functional characteristic of the team. When my team was running smoothly, I started helping out other Scrum Masters in Globo to overcome challenges in their teams, and started to coach other Scrum Masters.

Provider Sistemas Ltda., Agile Project Manager - Scrum Master
September 2004 - June 2009, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil
In this position I was the lead Agile coach, coaching 5 teams in implementing & maintaining Scrum. I was responsible for training the teams on both XP and Scrum expertise, and also to coach the team members, Product Owners and other stakeholders. My original position in this company was as a traditional Project Manager, but within a couple of years or hard work, I've helped turning the company in a successful agile shop.
