Born and raised outside of Chicago, IL; attended college in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Germany. Strong interest in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, travel, history, literature and other cultures from a young age.
Studied German overseas 1981-82, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany. Fully fluent in German - speak, read, write at college level.
Graduated with BBA in Marketing and Finance from University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1987. Recognized as student leader by Dean of Students for work with international student association called AIESEC. Represented University at National Conference on International Competitiveness 1986.
First career in International Market Research, working for GfK, Nuremburg, Germany, 1988-93, specializing in longitudinal consumer studies, life-style based consumer market segmentations and social trend analysis. Lived in the old city a few blocks from the "Burg". Fully bilingual.
Married 1989 to my college sweetheart, whom I met at UW-Madison. Traveled extensively through Western Europe with my wife 1988-93.
Moved to Denver, CO 1993 to start a family. Decided to try to "marry my career to my hobby” - photography. Our son is born 1995.
Second career in specialty retail technical sales working for small, family-owned but industry-leading photo/video store chain, Robert Waxman's Photo Video, 1993-98. Anchored Digitial Imaging Division 1996-98, providing 40% of gross sales and 50% of profits. Developed unparalleled reputation for marrying product capabilities with customer's needs and interests.
Third career in IT begins. Founded Digital Imaging Consultancy - The Pixel Mill, LLC 1996-2000. Work as external consultant to HP assisting with development of their digital camera line.
Used background and skill set in Digital Imaging to bridge into IT full-time, taking position at Lumin, Inc, 1998-2000 as Systems Support Engineer. Built, configured, tested, and maintained mission critical server for Fortune 500 client running workflow application used to track provisioning of voice mail hardware and software systems. Unfortunately, Lumin is unable to move into the digital imaging arena due to the end of the dot-com bubble.
Join the eCommerce development team at Corporate Express, Broomfield, CO, 2000 as Development Quality Analyst. Assumed responsibility for managing and maintaining CE's B2B eCommerce test environments while leading major project test efforts. Certified 2002 as Software Test Engineer. Developed, documented and implemented systematic test planning tool, leading to sustained quality improvement across all eCommerce projects. Critical defect rate drops to near zero and stays there under this system. Support 12 major software releases per year.
Our son enters school. My wife and I get involved at the local level and chair the school’s Accountability Committee (local steering board) for several years. Boy Scout Den Leaders. PTSA board members. Later, we again chair the Accountability Committee at his middle school.
Promoted 2002 to Test Architect. Establish process improvements for test effort estimation and defect post-mortems. Participate on UAT and Test Management Task Forces. Authored numerous technical documents detailing eCommerce functionality and integrations with CE backend systems. Developed and proposed interface-driven SOA test methodology. Release Test Lead or eCommerce Test Lead on numerous high-risk, mission-critical development projects including security and PCI related enhancements. Actively mentor and train other testers across organization in test approaches and methodologies. Evaluate software tool sets together with QE group.
Corporate Express begins exploring agile development 2005-06. Participate in smaller pilot efforts using agile as SDLC transitions. CE implements Endeca search to guided navigation, builds new real-time integrations with backend systems for pricing, inventory, contract, order status and customer domains using webmethods EAI and other technologies.
CE eCommerce B2B systems hit $500,000/hr peak run rate, exceed 500,000 active users.
First lead test engineer named to special team charged with complete rewrite of eCommerce systems - the largest project CE ever attempted – on the BEA platform using agile processes. Work as business analyst and test architect on this project in agile setting 2006-08. First exposure to ScrumMaster role. Extend web security background as Project Test Lead for parallel Single Sign-On Project using SAML on JBoss. New eCommerce system, "COE", goes into pilot May 2008. Assume role of Defect Backlog Coordinator until program ends.
Staples purchases Corporate Express, July 2008. Staples chooses to end “COE” and “SSO” programs November 2008 due to incompatible architecture with IBM-based Staples systems.
Principle Quality Analyst for Staples eCommerce Group “West”, 2008. Lead eCommerce Test Engineer and subject matter expert for “Four51” project to extend eCommerce product line to include custom print products. Assist Process Architect with business analysis. Project involves integration of 5 separate systems and data exchange/synchronization across 3 domains, finishes on time and on budget with no critical defects, reaches break-even within a year.
Staples embarks on a major PCI upgrade to former CE systems. Work as SME and Lead Test Engineer on this effort. Implement remote data protection service, input validation with page-level messaging and output encoding across all former CE sites. Number of code changes ranges into high 4-figures. Project is complete success, completes in 12 months with minimal defects.
Formal training in Business Analysis, 2009. Transition to Principle Technical Analyst on Salesforce team on loan to "Customer Pathways" project to move legacy CE customers to Staples systems.
Work as Data Analyst, eCommerce SME, Solution Architect, and ScrumMaster on “Customer Pathways” project as project unfolds. Major multi-year effort. Promoted to IS Application Development Consultant 2011.
Work as Data Analyst, Project Lead, ScrumMaster and Scrum Proxy Product Owner attached to SFDC development team in Broomfield, CO.
