Biography

Barbara Smith-Dawkins: Since becoming a Certified Scrum Master I have been involved in running multiple Sprints which produced five production releases in 2011 alone. I have performed well over 2000 hours of work utilizing the Scrum Methodology over the last two years in my duties as an analyst, Scrum Master, Domain Manager.  I have participated in a daily stand up lasting between 10 and 20 minutes at least once daily. We have multiple Sprints running on many occassions and I have served as ScrumMaster for more than one Sprint team at the same time over the last two years. As a Scrum Master on our main Sprint Teams I have performed multiple tasks including creating a Scrum Board, updating the Scrum Board, encouraging the team, escalating issues to the resource managers.  Our team loves a simple board using post notes; we tried others and always came back to this. I have also moved into the role of Domain Manager in the last three months; this gives me a different perspective of things and allows me to look more closely at the work that is coming in to our team.

Our Lights On (Run the Engine) team started off using a Scrum board but then adopted a Kanban method because we constantly have work flowing in and priorities changing.

All aspects of my job look at Scrum and what it means and how it makes our lives run easier. Our team has worked hard to make the Scrum methodology work in our daily processes.  We have seen some set backs and we had to create a layer between our Scrum processes and the large companies work that continues to be mainly waterfall. We have successful done this by utilizing project managers. As a team we have received blessing from high in the company to continue our work utilizing the Scrum methodology that we adopted and have been used as an example to other areas of the company.
