Scrum Gathering, Seattle 2011 is just two weeks away!
Check out the session schedule and register now!

The Scrum Alliance is proud to sponsor the Scrum Gathering, 2011 Seattle Global Event, to be held May 16-18, 2011 at the Grand Hyatt Seattle. Scrum Gatherings offer a chance for current practitioners to hone their skill and provide a wonderful introduction for Scrum beginners. The three-day event is an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced practitioners of Scrum and Agile frameworks.

The event features a variety of speakers, including keynotes by Steve McConnell, CEO and Chief Software Engineer at Construx Software, WIKISPEED CEO Joe Justice, Manifesto for Agile Software Development co-author Dr. Alistair Cockburn, and award-winning author Steve Denning.
Sessions will cover a wide range of topics like "Debunking the top 5 myths about PMI, the PMBOK® Guide and Agile" by Frank Schettini, VP of Information Technology at PMI, and "Extending Scrum with the Principles of Lean" by Alan Shalloway, CEO of Net Objectives.

Also scheduled to attend is the Scrum Alliance's newly appointed Managing Director, Carol McEwan. "I'm really looking forward to meeting other members of the Scrum Alliance at the Gathering, and getting the chance to network with some of the brightest minds in the Agile community. Event Chair Bryan Stallings has done a great job of lining up a group of speakers that will no doubt be as entertaining as they are informative, so it's going to be tough deciding which ones to attend," says McEwan.

In the Scrum Spotlight: Alan Shalloway

In this month's newsletter, we continue our series of articles reminding everyone to look beyond Scrum for good ideas. As great a framework as Scrum is, it's not the fountain for all wisdom. There are many great ideas to be found in other agile approaches.

In the following article, Alan Shalloway suggests that Scrum teams look at Lean and Kanban. Shalloway argues that as an approach to science, management and learning lean is a natural source of insights and a better fit for some Scrum teams.

Using Lean-Thinking to Help Scrum Teams
By Alan Shalloway

After years of helping organizations large and small to transition to become more Agile, I have learned one thing: The larger the organization, the more Lean thinking helps to be effective while using Scrum. Lean is not as necessary for smaller organizations with independent teams; however, it is vital for larger developmental organizations, say 100 or more. If you work in a larger organization, this article is for you.

Alan Shalloway is the founder and CEO of Net Objectives. With over 40 years in the industry, Alan is a thought leader in Lean, Kanban, Scrum and design patterns. You can find him on Twitter @alshalloway.

FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

Hello,

I’d like to take a minute to introduce myself to the community. My name is Carol McEwan, and I am the new Managing Director of the Scrum Alliance. As a previous outside consultant, I’m new to the position but not to the organization so I’ve been able to jump right in and start assessing the backlog. Many thanks to the Scrum Alliance team and all the community members who offered assistance to help ease the transition and make it as seamless as possible.

One of the first things I did in my new role was to become a Certified ScrumMaster through a class offered by Board Chairman Mike Cohn. Though I was already familiar with Agile, this was a fantastic opportunity to increase my understanding of Scrum, hone my skills, and meet others in the community. I was very impressed with the level of excitement the class generated and I’ll be quite interested to see how this new group of CSMs will help transform the world of work in their environments.

I want to thank everyone who has reached out to welcome me to the Scrum Alliance and offer their support. It was a bit overwhelming to be the recipient of such generosity but it helped make my first few weeks with the organization that much more enjoyable. I will be attending the Scrum Gathering in Seattle later this month as well as the Gathering in London this fall. I’m anxious to meet more community members so if you’re attending either of these exciting events, please be sure to introduce yourself.

Thanks again for making me feel so welcome. I look forward to working with you as we grow the Scrum community and transform the world of work.

Carol McEwan
