Letter from the Managing Director

Carol McEwan

The Regional Scrum Gathering® India 2014 took place last week in Hyderabad. I had the pleasure of attending this event and the honor of meeting so many Scrum enthusiasts. The passion, knowledge, and many ideas that were shared were nothing less than inspiring! With the theme of "Humane Scrum," the event featured case studies, workshops, and presentations about Scrum values and principles. The Open Space sessions and Scrum Coaching Clinic were very well attended. Among the participants were 426 delegates from 175 companies and 15 countries. More than 60 coaching clients met with 8 coaches at the Coaching Clinic.

Before the conference, 45 CSCs, CSTs, CSPs, and CSP candidates attended India's first CSP+ Retreat, which focused on spreading the value and benefits of CSP certifications in India.

A special thank-you goes to the organizing committee, team of volunteers, sponsors, and attendees. You were all an integral part in making this event extremely successful!

Global SCRUM GATHERING® Berlin is just around the corner – September 22-24, 2014. I look forward to meeting more members of our community there, where we will continue to share the passion, knowledge, and ideas of Scrum across the globe in our mission to “Transform the world of work.”

Five Things to Look for in a Scrum Certifying Organization

We know you have a lot of options when choosing a Scrum certifying organization, and you want to select the organization that provides the most value to you. After all, this is your career we’re talking about. To help you and your colleagues compare your options and decide on the best one for you, here are Five Things to Look for in a Scrum Certifying Organization

Scrum Alliance Sponsors New Event in Mexico

On June 19-20, Scrum Alliance sponsored the Scrum Adoption Clinic in Mexico City. Luis Carlos Jiménez, who ran this event, stated that attendees participated heavily and were enthusiastic about Scrum, and the evaluation results were extremely positive. Many useful aspects of Scrum were taught and shared, and this sparked a unique interest in certifications and the road map to earning these certifications. Scrum Coaching Retreats

2014 has been, and continues to be, a breakthrough year for the Scrum Alliance-sponsored Coaching Retreats. Following on the success of last year's Phoenix retreat, the June London retreat exceeded expectations. Sold out with 80 participants across 12 countries, the London retreat featured a residential getaway location and provided a focused and highly collaborative event. It was all beautifully illustrated by Stuart Young. Check out the teams' deep-dive results.

The rest of 2014 includes two additional coaching retreats - in Raleigh, NC, on October 28-30 (SOLD OUT) and Pattaya, Thailand, on December 4-6 (OPEN REGISTRATION). Both events include pre/post-retreat coaching workshops, deep-dive team-based learning (using Scrum to learn as coaches), and Open Space collaboration. Whether you are a seasoned Agile coach seeking collaboration with others or an aspiring coach looking for opportunities to grow and learn, Scrum Coaching Retreats provide excellent venues.

Can a Team Fit to a Bell Curve Be Self-Organized?
In many service based-companies, bell curve appraisals have been practiced for years. Now we are dealing with an undesirable reality: The team needs to adopt Scrum, but meanwhile a bell curve is imposed on the same team, even though that is not a Scrum practice.

Do Organizations Fully Leverage Agile Coaches?

Why Acceptance Criteria Are Needed Before User Stories Can Be Relatively Sized
For me, user stories are not "done" until proper acceptance criteria are in place. I can't overemphasize just how crucial it is to have proper acceptance criteria in place before user stories are relatively sized using story points.
